The final college football rankings are out. Now time for the analysts and arm chair coaches to ponder "what if."

From Sporting News, the first opinion

Eric Crouch is NOT a heisman trophy winner. just because he is a senior and came back from surgery. what a joke. put up a whooping 41 passing yards? and rushed more times than a running back? needless to say he will not be playing in the NFL AT ALL. then you put nebraska in the rose bowl? BCS is the most worthless system. It's worse than voters! It's called a playoff. you already have the month off before the bowl games...make that time a playoff time. D-II and D-III do it, why can't D-I? I love college football, but hate the politics and advertising.

The power is in the hands of the money, the conference chairmen. They want the bowls and the advertising that comes with them. Until that changes, we will never get a playoff system.

Crouch will not play quarterback in the NFL, but he is athletic enough that he may get some playing time at wide receiver or running back.

I, for one, don't want a playoff system. Bowl games aren't about finding out the best of a field, they are about finding the better or two teams.

Why does everyone want to see a playoff? College ball is about winning your conference, traditional rivalries, and watching college athletes grow in skill and stature. By themselves, bowl games are just money makers for athletic programs and television stations.

<< College ball is about ..., traditional rivalries... >>

Then why did they put Oklahoma and Nebraska in two different divisions in the Big 12. (North and South) That was the biggest game of the year for both of those schools and now they only play every other year in the regular season.
If college ball wasn't about the national championship, why do they crown a national champion every year?

disagree: he has no size, although i have never seen him catch more than a couple passes or ever run a route. way too small for running back. but even if by some miracle he does play in the NFL, he will not be drafted, and you can take that to the bank.

iamfriend: yeah, the BSC is trying their best to make Bowl games about finding the best. BUT in the past (distant past) bowls games weren't really thought of as 'play-off' games. They were just about seeing good match ups that weren't otherwise possible.

my point was just that BCS and most of sports media have it wrong when they try to turn bowl games into post-season playoffs. College football is interesting on its own, without having to contrive a playoff system.

thats a very good point. i would say that any matchup is possible now days though huh? but, the competitive instincts always try to figure out who's best. sports writers especially do that. but i do agree it has gotten out of hand overall.
