Yech, it would become "MSGoogle" or something like that, and every search would somehow return only pages talking about the wonderful benefits of MS software 😉

God no....that would be awful...

Bill Gates, the only man who has to sign in with an MSN passport to have sex....

That would be a huge blow to the internet as a whole. Without a doubt, they would destroy everything that makes google good.

And I am *not* and MS hater...I defend WinXP when people bash it, but they just shouldn't be a part of some things.

It would be interesting though when searches on terms like "penguin" and "panther" started returning 0 hits.

Umm the last I checked companies were not barred from expanding their user base. Just because they are a huge conglomerate does not mean that they are illegal. That being said, I'd rather see google stay independent, but who knows, it might be good for their stock price 🙂

I wouldn't be totally shocked to see a Microsoft acquisition, but Microsoft is also working on developing their own spider-based crawling system and advertising network equivalent to the Google AdWords advertising system so if an acquisition doesn't pan out they'll still have their own search engine - which will probably be a LOT stronger than most people think. Most people are so in love with Google and use it exclusively that they don't realize that Google is no longer light years ahead of other major spider-based engines like it was a couple years ago. Other search engines have made great strides in recent years copying and even improving upon Google's model. If Google's creators EVER wanted to cash in while they still have a technological lead and great brand recognition, now is the time. This is why pretty much everyone thinks the long-awaited IPO (or an eleventh hour acquisition) is within a few months of finally happening.

Personally, if Google was going to be bought by anyone I'd like to see them bought by Yahoo. They're both cornerstones of the Internet with fairly similar cultures - from an outside perspective. But Yahoo has comitted itself to developing its own search engine again (now owning Inktomi, FAST, and AltaVista) so that probably won't be happening. One quiet giant nobody ever seems to mention is AOL. Once Yahoo dumps Google in the next couple months, AOL will by FAR be Google's largest partner with financial resources on a scale similar to Microsoft.
