This goes way back to when I posted about my PSU going out. The PSU never got replaced, mostly because the issue never came up again (go figure with cheap me). It wasn't until I had an issue where my computer was trying to boot from the slave drive out of no where. I had it unplugged for a week and when I "fixed" the problem I had this "shut down-sounding problem" again. Definatly coming from the harddrives (yes, both of them at the same time) I unplugged the slave and as the noise progressed later in the day the computer started to momentarily freeze during the noise, uncharacteristic to my problem thus far. This progressed to where I was forced to shut down the computer in fear of losing some thing.
HOW EVER, I feel it is very important to note that the night before, when this started, the
case above the PSU was alarmingly hot. I did not turn the computer on the for the rest of the night and afterwards it did not get hot again.
First the noise persisted at start up when I got to the login screen and slowly moved its way to the point where I dont think the hard drive had a chance to be accessed. The computer ran the memory checks and found the harddrive which immediatly made the noise and crashed the computer. Never had a chance to even BEGIN loading windows. After letting it sit for about ten minutes unplugged it would be fine through the memory checks but then I started getting a mix of boot/read errors.
Needless to say, this is going to a repair shop tomorrow; having to be back at college for classes I cannot take the time to play around with it my self and order the necessary parts. Im fearing total HDD failur right now but the machine wasn't even getting past the boot screen before and the use of HDD checking software I was shown no issues. I turned on SMART and check with that and had no where near a failure looking situation.
What are your guy's thoughts on this? I need to know if it sounds like a HDD issue and I need to get a new HDD and retreive my information.
