In the novel that Starship Troopers is based on the soldiers didn't have just body armor (resembling space marine armor from Aliens) that they wore...

They actually wore a powered armored combat suit that was somewhat similar to these images based on what I read in the novel

Of course if the combat scenes featured these fighting bugs the story would have been a bit different and the production costs seem like they would have been much higher.

here is an image of a Tachikoma along with the main character of Ghost in the Shell for reference of scale

if Tachikomas are featured prominently then the production costs will probably be higher.

In the book, the power armor was a big part of the Roughnecks. But, it would have been much more costly to have people running around in power armor for the movies, and dehumanize the characters. The movie itself was trying to distance itself in parts from the books as well.

Those are Asians, they just don't share any of the characteristics you'd expect an Asian to have. It is really strange.

Yes they often have rather European Noses rather than Asian ones in manga and anime as far as my admittedly amateur (I am not an anthropologist) eyes can tell.

It isn't even just anime. Look at video games. Even with the higher detailed models, they rarely have features typical of Asians. Ryu in Street Fighter is Japanese, yet he looks just like the Caucasian American Ken.

Pretty close... and thanks for the help.

This is true as well.

So while I can understand the concerns about asian actors apparently not asked to try for the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi ironically the artists of the manga and anime draw their characters to have some non-asian features, as a result some Caucasian actors can fit the look of the character.

I imagine that the way that artists depict character models in manga, anime and videogames of Asian characters could be a somewhat interesting anthropology subject for a short essay or article.

You also have to remember the eyes, they tend to be huge in anime and manga and really don't look like asian eyes.

Just curious, what other anime series do you all think might translate into a live action movie, I think Psycho-Pass for one.

Yeah they don't look like any normal eyes in some cases as they are usually unnaturally large.

Not as much so in the Anime of GitS as some other examples but the noses seem more normal so I focused on that aspect.

I'd really like to see some of the early Mobile Suit Gundam series (the original, Zeta, double Z, and the OVAs) put into live action. Before they really became super robots. But, I am a huge mecha fan in general.

Death Note would be an interesting thriller, but far too long for a single movie. At least, the Light vs L saga. After that, it just got bad, IMO.
