HOWever, SS2 wasn't at all special for me . . . probably because it was a '99 game that i played last year . . . it has been surpassed in everyway by later games that ripped it off.

Actually, The only game that has come close to reproducing SS2's game mechanics was Deus Ex 1 and even then there are a mirriad of differences. This grand total of 2 games are the only ones who exist in the fine space between FPS and RPG and to say either of them has been surpassed in any way other than graphically would be a massive overstatement.
Although, SS2 is deffinitely not the scariest game. The bad guys can and will get the jump on you, but it never hits a Silent Hill/Fatal Frame/Undying level.

IMO DE-1/2 surpassed SS2 - in every way - and Thief series also fits in this 'narrow' space.
SS2 was revolutionary but it had its flaws . . . and it it were reased today - with a completly new engine -wouldn't even make a 'splash'.![]()

If it were released today it would be head and shoulders above every FPS release from the past 5 years. Infact, it is being released soon, it's called Bioshock. I'm not quite sure why you are so adamant on knocking SS2 down a peg, you've got very little con's to work with yet you've managed to insult it against the only other game that even remotely stands up to it, Deus Ex. Laughably, I'm not quite sure why you mentioned Deus Ex 2, because that series killing sequel was an abomination.

I'm playing it through on hard mode now (beat it on normal awhile back) and I still jump.
