I loved SS2 but never found it scary at all, despite what everyone told me before I got it. I don't think I've ever found a game scary, actually. Maybe it's just the way I approach them; I'm always on the lookout for funny glitches and unintentional bugs everywhere. :D

FEAR

1)Disturbing/creepy girl poping up at random momments.
2)The Darkness(compacted areas)
3)The game renders artificial lighting/shawdows/effects to give you that disoriented and halicunitating effect.
4)The sounds made throughout the game.

Actually, The only game that has come close to reproducing SS2's game mechanics was Deus Ex 1 and even then there are a mirriad of differences. This grand total of 2 games are the only ones who exist in the fine space between FPS and RPG and to say either of them has been surpassed in any way other than graphically would be a massive overstatement.

Although, SS2 is deffinitely not the scariest game. The bad guys can and will get the jump on you, but it never hits a Silent Hill/Fatal Frame/Undying level.

Another vote for the Shalebridge cradle level in Thief: Deadly shadows.

I'm feeling old.

Alone in the Dark. This was back in 1993 or 1994.

Years later, Silent Hill.

can't agree with you . . . except SS2 isn't scary

and Oblivion also fits in the space between RPG and FPS . . . ;)

IMO DE-1/2 surpassed SS2 - in every way - and Thief series also fits in this 'narrow' space.

SS2 was revolutionary but it had its flaws . . . and it it were reased today - with a completly new engine -wouldn't even make a 'splash'. :p

It use to be Fatal Frame on the PS2, but I think it's been replaced by Condemed. Also, I would like to mention The Shalebridge Cradle from Theif 3. It was a place you had to visit in the game that was once an Orphanage but now an abandoned Insane Asylum. Creepy stuff.

Top 3:

1) Silent Hill 3
2) Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
3) Thief III (just for that Shalebridge Cradle level)

Yet another worthless post.

FEAR was kinda creepy, dont really play that many that are scary though.

worthless in this thread yeah. It should go in "Whats the worst unbalanced game you ever played?"

BTW Fear wasn't to bad scary because I played through it. If a game is to scary I won't play through it because my blood pressure and stress levels get to high :D. But the creepiest would have to be Resident Evil series(except for 4) and then Doom III(that I've played anyway).

I played Doom III a whole 45 mins.

As apoppin mentioned above, they did an excellent job with the marine campaign. I watched those movies as a kid, so perhaps there is some deep psychological scarring, but the first time I encountered the face huggers I was so unnerved I quit. Only recently did I go back and finish it.

If it were released today it would be head and shoulders above every FPS release from the past 5 years. Infact, it is being released soon, it's called Bioshock. I'm not quite sure why you are so adamant on knocking SS2 down a peg, you've got very little con's to work with yet you've managed to insult it against the only other game that even remotely stands up to it, Deus Ex. Laughably, I'm not quite sure why you mentioned Deus Ex 2, because that series killing sequel was an abomination.

some of us like DE:IW because we were able to take it completely separate from the game it shares it name with. it is a fine game on its own . . . . if you were not so disappointed that it did not meet your expectations from playing DE

i think you guys elevate SS2 above other games because you played it in '99 . . . it PIONEERED so many elements that are now considered essential.

but it had it weaknesses . .. the endless respawning . . . the puzzles and jumping crap stand out right now.

and i know about Bioshock and am looking forward to it

Frankly "riddick" is a better pure FPS and DE much better as a similar 'hybred'. . . i was just not that impressed with SS2 . . .

and of course awful gfx didn't help the impression although i did complete SS2.

Both SS2 and DX were some of the best games I've played, but I also think that DX was overall better. DXIW was a different story though. It really paled in comparison to the original and for me it was probably the most disappointing sequel ever, although I agree that it was still a good game in it's own right.

Got nothing new to add, so I'll just give my 02

Doom III
FEAR
SS2
And definitely a vote for Thief: Deadly Shadows, Shadelbridge Cradle level. Wasn't as scary as DIII, but had the creepy factor of Fear/SS2. About 3/4 the way through Condemned which is pretty good for this too. Shameless plug alert :): Thief DS in my FS thread is worth the price of admission just for a few levels. Apoppin's been right all along. End plug.
