i've only had to make one emergency stop from speed (~150kmh) and it was terrifying, beside a 40m plus roadtrain, on a tiny strip of bitumen, gravel on one side, roadtrain the other...

It was just at sunrise while driving from West Australia to the Eastern states, and i pulled out around this roadtrain and just nailed it without doing a good check (already doing about ~140kmh), halfway past the truck i see a car coming at me over a ridge up ahead, and i smack the brakes on as hard as i can, truckie pulls onto the verge to try and give some more space (top bloke, and we slide a long way, somehow staying on the bitumen, then as i get really close to the oncoming car i hopped off the brakes for a second and steered off into the gravel, then plant 'em again. Came to a halt just in front of the car, truck pulled up a bit further ahead.

'Phew' and i sheepishly get on the gas and ease past the car, little wave and get a wave back, truckie gives us a wave, and off we go...neither my bro or i said anything for about 10minutes ;)

accident before my eyes on interstate I80. car in the other direction eastbound came out of control over the grass median, gets clipped by semi at 80mph+, goes into spin and slams into guardrail. Semi locks up his breaks and slides off embankment and falls on its side. Baby in car is ejected from car and this i'm slamming on my breaks.

closest call I've ever had.

And as for mine:

We were driving down the freeway right after a major snow storm and the plows had moved all the snow to the shoulders. I was getting off at an exit when the right front tire of my Jeep caught the snow and then sucked me into the rest of it. We went side ways, front facing the freeway, with the back end up the 45 degree embankment. The Jeep never stopped, I steered out of it and just kept going on my merry way.

Ask Lola about that one ;)

bitumen: Also called asphalt or tar, bitumen is the brown or black viscous residue from the vacuum distillation of crude petroleum. It also occurs in nature as asphalt ?lakes? and ?tar sands.? It consists of high molecular weight hydrocarbons and minor amounts of sulfur and nitrogen compounds.

Going over a bridge/overpass on my way to NYC and there was a fire under the bridge. Thick black smoke pouring up from the sides over the roadway.

I've had a few, what some would call "scary moments", like sliding because the road is wet, or getting sandwiched by a woman with no insurance.

I think though, that my thing that scared me the most was when I started learning how to street drift. sliding my car sideways in the mud to start which had a few fences mad at me. moved onto gravel roads and realized that traffic was still on the road, sliding sideways as another vehicle passed me. then came the wet roads, am just now figuring out how to make the car go where I want with slick roads. oh, and ice, can't forget about the ice, almost ruined the passengers front end of my car because of the mixture of ice, speed, corner and a fairly large rock that wouldn't of cared if my car hit it.

Almost ran into a bicyclist who was paying more attention to a chicks ass on the right rather than if it was his turn to go. Had to swerve into the second lane just before schmucking the dumbsh!t. I should have just hit him then stopped to ask him if it was worth it.

Easily the scariest moment for me was when I chased down a hit-and-run.

I was driving down the street and came to a stop at a red light behind another car. A pickup came up behind me going about 40 mph or so and I knew he wasn't stopping. He slammed into me hard, driving my car forward. After I checked on my gf in the passenger seat, I started to get out of the car when the pickup moved around me and took off. Naturally, I gave chase, and with him in a big F-150 and me in my Audi A4, it wasn't too difficult to stay with him. I ended up chasing him for almost 10 minutes through traffic when he finally stopped and gave up on a side street. By that time the cops had showed up (my gf was on the cell phone with the police as soon as we started the chase), and it was only later that I realized that we had crossed two major streets to get where we were

The fvcked up part is that the cops told me that they couldn't press charges for hit-and-run, since I caught him, and at that point, it was his word against mine. If he had gotten away, and later on they had used the info I could have given them (make, model, color, license plate, etc) in combination with the damage to the front of his truck, I could have pressed charges for hit-and-run, not to mention taking every damn penny out of his life in civil court.

In retrospect, it was one of the stupidest things I've ever done in my life, but in the heat of the moment I was so angry that he thought he could run and get away with it. I'm lucky I didn't get a second accident during the chase (or possibly even worse). As soon as I had the license number, I should have given up and let the police track that fvcker down.

Probably when someone plowed their car into the back of mine at about 120km/h and put my car into the guard rail flipping my car over on the 401... then, it landing on its wheels and having to regain composure and steer away from other other cars/trucks on the road.

I successfully maneuvered the car to the side of the road with no further problems...

I think I needed some new pants after that. the other car flipped into the ditch and they had to be cut out of their car...

Mine was when I spun my little BMW out for the first time. It's an 82, nothing special, 4 banger, but it had rear wheel drive. It was a rainy morning at about 6am as I was driving to my friends appartment to give him a lift to school. I made a right hand turn at about 25 on a major intersection that I routinly pulled off at 30(hehehe, it might be old but it still turns well). Only this time the backend started to come out, I tried to counter steer to correct the issue, but the back just kept going (whups foot was still on the gas), so I just put 2 feet in (clutch and brake) and rode it out. I ended up in the far right lane (on 3 lanes each way and the yellow lane in the middle) facing the opposit direction, watching headlights on the otherside of the intersection.

I just kind of calmly put it into first gear, and turned around and took the rest of the day very easy.

would have to be coming back from Holiday World theme park last Saturday night.. About 12:30am on a divided 4 lane state highway (rt 13 for those in the S. Illinois area), coming up westbound in front of the Carbondale Walmart intersection.

Two of us, I was in the passing lane doing about 45, van to my right doing about 55 (road goes to 3 lanes there). Numbnutz decides to make a left turn in front of us against a red light. (no left turn yield option here, too big of an intersection).

in about 3/4 of a second, I went from thinking about how we were almost home and talking to my wife, to the 'oh sh!t I can't believe what I'm seeing, gotta brace and nail the brakes, where can I veer to". We missed him by about 5 feet, the van didn't, caught him square broadside. The impact happened about 10 feet diagonally from us. I've never seen such a violent car accident. It looked to be a mid-90's Escort 4dr. The van pushed it about 25 ft, spun it around twice after hitting it, then the van continued on across a concrete light island, took out a light, and across another turn lane and up an embankment before stopping.

It was so quick, when the car was hit,the wheels broke off, causing a shower of sparks like fireworks, windshield washer fluid (from the van) sprayed all over our car, that's how close at the time of impact we were).

Bottom line neither person was DUI, just poor driving. The guy that got hit was lucky, they had to extricate him but he was released the next morning according to the paper. Guy driving the van had burns to his forearms (airbag) and rib pain. Other than that he was ok.

If our car (2002 Taurus w/ ABS) hadn't allowed us to veer to the left while I had the brake pedal punched and held down we would have hit him too.

I'm not the biggest fan of our Taurus, but it came through that night.

Oh yea, didn't sleep at all that night. Hopefully never see anything that close again.

I can't find my old thread, but that would probably be slaloming around a Kia-Sedona driving soccermom who decided that she could just back right out of her driveway. And stopping wasn't an option, due to an F350 on my bumper.

I think mine is that ever single time I drive in that damn town called Tulare I almost take someone out. They have a lot of left turn yield on green light intersections and people turn in front of me when I have the right of way almost every time I've been to that damn town.

But scariest? Well I think that was when I was driving to work one morning, driving on a smaller country road to a main road. Come up to the stop sign and I hit the brakes to stop but I don't stop. I keep sliding towards the main road wich has a lot of traffic on it. I had hit a patch of black ice...I was able to steer a little and slide off to the dirt and get traction to stop but it was freaky.

I never thought I would hit black ice where I live...I mean it doesn't even get cold here. We don't get snow. The last time that I remember it getting cold enough to ice over water was when I was probably about 15 years younger.

One time I was driving back home late from a friends house(bout a 10min trip). Guess around 3am and I was extremely tired. Anyone there is a railroad trestle I think its called over this narrow two lane bend in the road. I've never really liked going through there with my truck anyway but for some reason I decided to take that route. Being as tired as I was I wasn't paying enough attention to what i was doing so I miss judged the turn and cut it a little short. Then BAM! I nailed the curb doing about 35mph. The front of the truck popped up and landed in the middle of the oncoming lane. I didn't lose control but it sure scared the hell out of me. If I'd come 5secs earlier I would have nailed the car that had just passed and if the curb hadn't been there I would have nail a trestle support at 35mph. I guess I got lucky. Since then I haven't driven through there unless I was fully alert and doing about 15mph.

People don't check their mirrors and every once in a while someone doing 30 under whatever I'm doing will cut me off and wonder why I can't keep my hands off the horn.
