Scared to put CPU in socket...

Long story short...I RMA'd a CPU but I feat that thermal compound may have gotten into the CPU socket on my GA-K8VNXP.

Is there any to be sure before I place the new CPU in the socket? I heard that it would fry up if any compound was in the socket.

I don't know if this'll help...but I repeatedly tried the older cpu in that socket and I never saw smoke or smelled anything, but the mobo would beep...then with no cpu it would not beep.

Care to elaborate on how thermal compound may have gotten into the socket?

That would be a bit unusual because the TIM goes on the "other side" of the CPU

haha im not that stupid....basically when i took the cpu out it touched the paste...but i cleaned it off...but you never know if anything gets left behind.

if any thermal compound is in there its a miniscule amount but that would be enough to ruin my day.

Not sure I'm following you but....

If the pins on your cpu are now clean and shiny, put it into the the socket (do not power up etc). Just take it back out and examine the pins again. If they're still clean and shiny, I'd say no TIM got into the socket.

Unless the heatsink paste is electrically conductive, there shouldn't really be any problem. But if you're concerned, take a Qtip moistened with rubbing alcohol and carefully clean the pins. BTW, you should only ever use a paper thin coating of paste between the CPU and heatsink, never globs. Good luck.

Sounds like you're getting really paranoid. I say that if there even is paste in there, it's not enough to damage anything. I don't even think there is any either. The paste is thick enough that the hole would be totally cloged if any got in. The movie looked fine to me, exactly what's supposed to happen. I say don't worry about it.
