Scared at new VIA / SIS chipset, will it downgrade my AGP ratio to X1 with Nividia GF3?

Hi,

I think from flying around in these forums I came across some info.

The NIVIDIA graphics chipset, when it detects its inside a system with the VIA chipset it instantly downgrades the AGP multiplier to 1X and nothing more. This is because (so they say) nividia thinks the via chipset is unstable

THis not only pissed me off coz I have a via chipset and a GF3.

My question is this;

Im looking for a new mobo and I have come across these 3 boards. 1 is a via and the other is a SIS chipset. Does Nivida still downgrade the AGP ratio to x1 with newer chipsets?

the 3 boards..........

THE VIA CHIPSET (DDR 333)

THE SIS CHIPSET (DDR 333)

THE VIA CHIPSET (DDR333) (P4)

Plz help me coz I dont want to waste more money on sh1t mobos :)

I'm just curious, could you provide some links or backup info on that claim?

All my friends including myself have GF2/GF3 with VIA boards and they all run fine in 4x AGP mode,so you will have no problems with either SiS or VIA boards running in 4x AGP mode. All DDR 333 boards will run ok in that mode.

you have been handed soem misinformation. That may have been an issue with distant past boards but not with the current ones.

I agree. You've been handed a load of crap. Very often, some VIA users will report that they are only getting 1x AGP when installing a new video card, but 99.9% of the time, it's because they forgot to install the VIA (or AMD, SiS) AGP driver in "turbo" mode along with it.

A few years back, when the Athlon and GeForce was first released, there was strobe glitch bug in the AMD 750 (Irongate) chipset that caused the system to lock or freeze whenever running any 3d apps. Because this was a hardware issue, the only work-around was to have the video card drivers drop the AGP setting to 1x to minimize (not eliminate) the problem. Later revisions of the AMD 750 supposedly corrected the problem and it has never resurfaced since. I believe the nVidia drivers still do this whenever it detects a motherboard using this old chipset, but you can always re-enable it again via software or registry setting.

Hmmmm, I cant find this info anymore, the sodding post is gone from the VIA-ARENA but straight from the horses mouth (via that is) they said it down clocks it to x1.

They even brought out a registry fix to get windows to trick the drivers into x4 mode.

Yes Im running on an old board, a APOLLO k133 dual PIII mobo.

It took me ages to find what the F*** was wrong, and Im a bit scared with them.

Its just that when they say it downgrades the ratio as soon as it detects VIA Im thinking it still will do it. my impression was NIVIDIA hates VIA.

But if u think thats a thing of the past I thank u :)

What out of the 3 mobos above do u reckon?

Thx

Everybody hates VIA. for no particular reason, IMO.

Some of us do have our reasons. That's not to say that all VIA boards suck. I can't imagine that they do. I've honestly only used a few out there, but those few were enough to sour me to VIA.

Everybody hates VIA. for no particular reason, IMO. Personally, I like VIA way more than SiS and ALi. VIA boards are widespread, thus you can get ones for very low prices, the stability and speed of the latest VIA chipsets is great. In fact, they have become lighting fast, rock stable, absolutely glitch and bug free, and unbelievably cheap.

I think you can't go wrong with either of those 3 mobos. Any of them is excellent, IMO.

Not quite everyone, there are definitely still some that have a very positive opinion of many of VIA's chipsets. Certainly they have some issues but on the whole I tend to like VIA quite a lot personally and I have absolutely no qualms with trusting my system to a VIA chipset.
