scanning tips

I have something like an Epson 4180 flatbed scanner, or something like it. It has the attachment where you can scan 35mm as well as slides, etc. My problem is, the negatives don't look good to me, but I'm not sure if I'm just not scanning them right. What is the recommended resolution for doing high resolution scans? Just wondering what ya'll think.

Use the Epson Smart Panel and have the setting @ Professional Mode then under the Original /Document setting type have it set to Film...
Another alternative is to see if your Scanner is supported by SilverFast

I don't know how the flatbeds work, but the HP Photosmart S20 is awsome for negatives. (2400 Optical DPI, 24 bit color). Can be had on Ebay for fairly cheap, and as a bonus it does slides and small pictures (pictures are only 300 DPI iirc.

The small footprint is a huge + for anyone who doesn't need a full flatbed.
