"Scanning the PCI Bus" Problem @ startup

I'm just booting up a new machine with a 1.33 Ghx Athlon and an Ak31 mobo. When I insert the win98 boot disk things start clicking but the computer halts at the line "Scanning PCI bux Using Mechanism #2." What's up?

i had the same problem for a few months. i eventually solved it by pulling my promise hard drive controller card and running my drives off the motherboard ide channels. try moving cards around and see if that helps and possibly a bios setting will fix it too. if all else fails, you might have to pull a card like i did.

I had this prob on an old comp with a promise ata66 controller card, pci that is. I just said the hell with it and made my own cdrom boot disk, but I guess there is a fix so...
