Scanning over the network

Anyone know of any software (preferably free) that allows you to scan over a network from a pc that has a scanner connected to it? I found Xsane, but that thing is a pain to setup. I can't make heads or tails of the docs.

PC Cellin will let you do this if you buy the pro edition, it is really simple to use, the interface is just a matter of clicking on the machine that it detects on your lan and scanning.

and how do i do that? i can't get to my scanner folder over the network on that machine. i can't share the scanner either. maybe my brain is off, but i don't know right now.

i'm hoping to avoid paying for any software that'll do the scanning over the network. unless of course, it's only going to cost like $30 or something and only has to be loaded on one machine. i've found another piece of software that allows you to scan over network, but you have to buy licenses for each machine wanting to scan. bullpoop!

Share (read-only suggested) the root of the drives you want to scan over network. Name them as driveC or something.
(sharing: right click on the drive, select the "sharing" menu item or Properties, and "Sharing" tab. Choose the "share this folder" radio button, put a name, set a sharing mode (read only suggested). Press OK

Map the drive:
On the computer with the antivirus, start a Windows Explorer, explore in Network Neighborhood to the computer you want to scan, right click the driveC "folder" on it and select "Map network drive". Select a drive letter (like Z🙂 and press OK
Afterward, you can scan it just like any other drive

maybe i was unclear. i know how to map network drives and such. i know how to share a folder. what i want to do is be able to scan pictures and documents on a SCANNER over the network. just have a scanner hooked up to one computer and be able to go through that computer to scan something. kind of like sharing a network printer.

I don't know really how this could be done "as a network printer". But if you use another (supplemental( computer linked to the scanner, you could use something like RealVNC as "remote controller".
Of course, if you would have another computer, the need for a virtual network console dissapear (it would just save a monitor and let you scan from your computer, just that you would have to go and feed the scanner)
