Scanning large amount of 3 x 5 photographs

I have tons of old photo albums in my closet, each with dozens of photographs that I've collected over the years. In all there are probably a thousand photographs total.

Is there any easy way to get them all scanned into the computer? I'd like them to be stored digitally, this way they can easily be shared with my family.

What I'm looking for is a scanner than can autofeed and auto scan a stack of 3 inch x 5 inch photos with minimal supervison. Scan quality should be great.

Anyone have any recomendations on what scanner to buy? Preferably one that you've used for a similar task as mine.

Thanks 🙂

Any chance you saved the negatives? I think they have scanners that will scan those in and might be better quality to boot. Check out dpreview.com and/or ask there too.

Wow hard to find one with an auto feeded to make it easier.

Im sure there are those one that look like slot dvd players on ebay somewhere.

Good luck and post what you find because I might do the same.

Kim Komando often recommends to farm the job out to a pro when you have a huge collection. And if they were printed on "satin" paper rather than glossy, then the scans won't likely be as good as they could from negatives or slides. But you could go to the Epson store on their web site and there are usually a number of refurb and/or clearance models to choose from at least some of which have available document feeders. And Staples was carrying a Microtek model (the 5950 Pro) with a doc feeder for about $150. AR. I think they've cleared them out of most stores (it was an "in store only" special - never listed on line) but you might find one where you are.
. And there's always eBay. I got my Epson scanner for under $50 shipped there and it was "New In Box"! There are always some of those on there that people got "free" with a system after rebates - you know the song and dance. They didn't want it in the first place so it ends up on eBay.

My recomendation is Canon LiDE500F. It's mid-price, new tech and will be a great starter machine to get you into your project. Be sure to consider HDD back-up, processor speed and RAM when getting started. Good luck, you'll love the results when you build a slide show, add music and watch the memories with family & friends on the DVD.
