I need a fast flatbed scanner. Would anyone share their experience with brands of scanners? I have had 2 HP scanners and they both have bit the dust right after the warranty expired. The last one is a scanjet 5300c that will only scan using the LPT1 port. (printer is on router) This slows it down considerably compared to using USB. Scanner will no longer work using USB. I would like to be able to scan a page without the scan stopping every second or two to catch its breath.

I really like my Canon Canoscan N1220U

but the much less expensive Canoscan 600 series is also well ranked

The epson 640U is also another well liked scanner

I love my Microtek ScanMaker X6EL. It's legal-size and comes with SCSI card and slide adapter. I've had no problems with it and it's both quiet and fast (for me at least).

I'd recommend giving Microtek a serious look.

HP = pricey.

Agfa often has crappy drivers.

Epson usually has good drivers.

I have no experience with Canon flatbeds.
