I scan all my bills, notices etc and store them electronically. I am having problems with my current scanner and am in the market for a different one. Ideally it will have:
1) ADF
2) Native support for XP - this is where my current one fails. Under 2000 and XP SP1, all the software worked great. Since I have gone to XP SP2+, I have had to jump through hoops to get it to work.
3) Legal and Letter
4) Scan to PDF - I know this is largely a SW issue, but I want to make sure the drivers + SW handle this.
5) Ideally it also has Duplex support.
From what I have seen the best bang for the buck with an ADF is from HP. It could simply be that I'm not aware of other competing products.
