Scanner: What DPI do I need to just scan black and white handwriting?

I want an affordable flatbed scanner. Nothing fancy.
I really just need it to scan in handwritten memos legibly/clearly.

$99 Epson or $99 Canon?

A scanner that can do 600dpi without interpolation is what to look for. Just about any scanner now can do that. It will usually say 4800 for the resolution which is 600dpi for a 8x11 sheet of paper. Don't worry about things like 36bit color unless you are doing photo archiving or something really important with color.

I ended up getting this for $80. 4800 x 9600 DPI. I figured USB 2.0 might be faster, so I went for the USB2.0 upgrade. I won't be buying another scanner for another 5-10 years, so no need to TOTALLY cheap out.
