I've decided to cut my fax line and dump the fax machine. In its place I need a scanner to send the occasional fax.
With that in mind, I'd appreciate any recommendations from those with scanners. My needs are basic: occasional faxed document sent off. No high resolution photos, nothing fancy. A Word doc or PDF is pretty much it.
Also, there are a thousand online fax services available. I receive and send a few each month. Who do you like?

One of the Canon CanoScan models should serve you well. Thin, lightweight, quiet, and they run with just USB power.

I have an LiDE 600F, which has a built-in stand that comes in particularly handy when desk space is limited and all I need to scan are documents. The software driver is even decent- nothing fancy, but it works without bloat. Oh, and the scan quality is pretty decent too.
