I work for a small, local, cable ISP. Since we migrated our email to Google hosting, our old host has discontinued access to the old mail server.
Previously, any customer on our network could use our SMTP server with no authentication or encryption. Google's SMTP requires SSL encryption, and this caused compatibility issues with a handfull of Ricoh scanner machines that didn't support SSL. I helped a few of those customers by configuring the machines with a free AOL.com email address (one of the last SMTP servers that works over port 25 without requiring SSL).
Recently, I encountered a Ricoh Aficio 2035E. It's a bit worse. Like the others, it doesn't support SSL encryption. However, I can't use the AOL work-around because it doesn't even support authentication.
Their router is a WRT54G. If it will run DD-WRT, can it function as an SMTP relay, passing messages to a server that requires auth+SSL? Using Google, I can't find a clear answer on this.
