Scanner defaults B&W text to 100dpi. Software hangs if I change to 300dpi.

I am trying to scan 3 pages of text. If I scan in photo or image mode, the scans are clear, but will be huge. At work, I normally scan in "black and white" mode with no issues. At home, with the V300, on the same software, I get horrible resolution in B&W mode. The text is unreadable. It looks like a 30 year old 8th generation Xerox ditto. If I click "adjust the quality of scanned picture", I see the default is 100dpi. As soon as I try to change it to 300dpi, the software hangs.

did you look on epson site for update.

I did this again.
Black and white at 300dpi.
Each JPG is about 300KB.
All 6 pages turned into a 2MB .jpg file
Is this right?
