ScanDisk on SATA

I've got two comps with SATA HDDs, both got WinXP(SP2).
However, neither can run ScanDisk on boot up. It just says: "Cannot open volume for direct access", doesn't to the check and just runs Windows.

I've been googling it for an hour and nothing.

Microsoft says the problem was resolved with SP2 but not really, and they have no more updates on it. 🙁
