Scandisk error?

Hello, I just built myself a computer, no problem.

So My parents get my old one. A Gateway P3 500mhz. It has been working fine, and then I give it to them for a few days and then when they try to boot it up it brings up an error on the hard disk and goes into Scandisk, and then while trying to run scandisk, this comes up: "Scandisk encountered a data error while writing to the root directory. This error prevents scandisk from fixing this drive."

I have never seen anything like this. Any advice? I am thinking I will have to reformat the HD, which I have never done. If that is the case any tips on how to do that? I am going to call Gateway, but thought I would come here first.

Also, just out of curiousity, if formating is the only option, I have heard Gateways have problems running Win2000, any truth to that? It did come with a Voodoo 3 video card (another card I have heard has problems with Win2000), and the Gateway GoBack program..oh well, if formatting was something I would like to get them on 2000 rather than 98..

Anyhow, sorry for the length. Any help would be much appreciated.
