Scandisk & Defrag lock up my Win98 system.

Every time I try to run Defrag or Scandisk my comp locks up. I can bring it to a blue screen by pressing ctrl+alt+del a couple times. At that screen it states "system busy" waiting for close dialog box. Once there sometimes it locks up other times I can press a key and exit out. Once I exit it goes to desktop which is all black except yhe outline of dialog boxes. However every time, no matter what I try, I end up having to reset HD or hard reboot.

Are there any shared files that I can try to replace? Is there a way I can get rid of all associated files and reinstall them from the 98 CD?

Thanks in advance.

I think you might wonna try reinstalling win98. You won't loose any Data or Programs, it just resets certain things. You might wonna give it a try, it just might work.
Good Luck

Do you have any virus protection or ZoneAlarm running in the background? If so, turn them off and try again.

^ Yep, not only that, make sure ALL programs and screen savers are turned off. Go to the run box and type: msconfig. Disable all the junk loading at startup, reboot and then try.

Hit ....Ctrl-ALT-DEL...........and

Well, disable everything but "Explorer" and "Systray" these are the only open programs you should be running if you are running WIN 98! ...and run scandisk first!

You may also try running them in safe mode. Odds are if they run
in safe mode, it is a conflicting startup file....Greg
