Scandisk cause computer to freeze

I have just installed WInME yesterday, and I was running scandisk to check if everything is allright. After several tries scandisk just restarts the scan process, and then all of sudden the screen just froze, but I can still hear the LED flashing and sounds coming from my comp. I think that the comp was still processing but somehow the screen just froze, I don't think it has anything to do w/ the vid card nor the monitor. I just can't explain this weirdness, could someone help me out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ps. I was using Win98 first edition before I upgraded to WinME

Hm, running in safemode would be a good idea, but how do I choose running in safe mode. I have never seen an option as "Restart in Safe Mode" appeared when shutting down my computer.

In win98 pressing F8 at the Windows splash screen would give you a list of 8 boot options, one of those being safe mode. I don't know too much about WinME though .

if you have a version of norton utilities that can run in winme, i suggest running disk doctor instead.

if you can, shut down any other programs that are running.

Well I have WinME now, but i could go back to win98, but I would like to try WinME..... I have an old version of norton(believe that was made in '95 or around that). And I do alt+ctrl+delete every apps, except explorer, before I run scandisk. But it still freezes...... I have no idea 🙁
