GF's computer has stoopid Win ME installed and recently on startup runs scandisk EVERY FRICKIN' TIME. It's a DELL Dimension 2100 with a P4 933mhz. How do make it stop?? Or, being a DELL, will it let me reformat and install XP???

Being a Dell has nothing to do with the software aspect. Agreed that you will lose the cool background image in Help & Support but is that a big deal? I say reformat and install Windows XP on that thing! Otherwise I don't know anything about editing the boot procedure in Windows so I can't help you, sorry.

Is it being shut down correctly every time?

Yes, You can put XP on there. Just make sure she has 256mb or better of ram and turn off the eye candy to keep it feeling quick.

To see what's in startup go to: start>programs>accessories>system tools>system info. Then click on tools, select system configuration utility. When it pops up hit the startup tab to whats checked to launch.

You might also check the maintance wizard (in system tools) to make sure its not set to run scan disc at bootup

Start>Run> type "msconfig" (without quotes) is a little faster to get to the same point.
