heh this is probably a pea roast but i searched for scammer, vigilante and 419

some dude by the name of Mike berry decided to get back at the 419 scammers by stringing them along

"An interesting article over on the Guardian caught my eye today. The article tells the story of a self-titled 'comedy-nerd' (Mike Berry) who by day works as a computer technician in Manchester but at night is a vigilante with a quest to stop the 419 internet scammers.

For those who don't know about the 419 scams then check out Wil's article from November last year. Hailing from Nigeria these scam-artists send out emails requesting that you give them your bank details so that they can deposit money into your account. Their reasons for doing this are numerous, some claim to be Kings hoping to get their money out of the country, others claim to be farmers hoping to flee for their lives, all however are scammers.

Angered by the rise in 419 emails Mike Berry, has decided to fight fire with fire. His strategy has been to provide false trails and fake acceptance emails in an attempt to clog up their inbox. The 'comedy-nerd' part comes into play when you read some of his responses. The best chain of emails I read from his wealth of stories can be seen here, I'll summarise it below:

Mike receives a typical email asking for money. Rather than trashing it he instead replies stating that he is working for a company that is trying to compile different types of handwriting. He tells the Nigerian (named Cyril) who sent it that he will pay $100 via a bank transfer for every A4 page of handwritten content as he is trying to compile a study of different hand writing styles.

Obviously quite excited by this, Cyril replies stating that he would love to take part in the study as long as he is paid. Mike (who is acting under the alias Arthur Dent) assures him he will be paid in full upon receiving a fully handwritten copy of the first Harry Potter book.

After a little back and forth in the emails Cyril agrees to do it and sends 249 hand written pages full of Harry Potter goodness to Mike expecting his big pay off. Mike then stopped correspondence and as you can imagine Cyril blows his top. The emails go on gaining in hilarity. If you're a fan of the Hitchikers Guide then I recommend a read.

We'd like to know if you've ever performed a similar prank on a 419 scammer - tell us about it in the forums. "

There was one where they got a guy to carve a keyboard out of wood, along with other stuff, it was crazy how far these scammers go for cash.

Yeah, I got one of those scammers before. I located them on CraigsL, They were talking about selling me a car for an outragous deal, It was like a 02 audi a4 for 3k dollars, because the guy and his "wife" were getting a divorce and he was trying to get rid of it quick, only problem, he was in nigeria and would ship the car out. He notified me that it would not be a problem because the car was still registered in the states. So I emailed him how interested I was and we started emailing each other back and forth where I eventually convinced him to send the car in 1 day rather than the original 18 days that it takes to ship a car, and I haggled him down to 100 dollars for the car until I eventually said that the money was on its way and kept lying to him driving him crazy until he stopped responding! not as good as the other one but it will do.

I had a scammer going for a couple weeks... He sent an email to our farm's homepage: slatebrookfarm.com

So, I explained to him that it was a subsidiary of the State Farm insurance group, yadda yadda yadda... I would handle all the paperwork for the transaction, saving a great deal of money over the expected upfront costs (10% of 48 million dollars or whatever "expenses" were.) I agreed to ship him all the paperwork, plus I would wire him whatever up front cash was required on his end to close the deal... Had him biting for a couple weeks; and I was just on the verge of getting him to send a self-addressed stamped envelope, but my wife deleted all the emails. :( (I was using her account.) She has since blamed me for a surge in 419 scams in her inbox.

The only problem I have with these carving stories is that these scammers obviously don't have the talent to do this themselves, an in a country like Nigeria there's a good chance that someone of low moral standings could very well force women and children to do this stuff for them. It makes me a bit antsy about those types. Don't get me wrong, I love nothing more than to see scammers getting scammed. I've spent many an hour at 419eater.com
