I'm selling something on craiglist and this lady responded to my ad. I answer her question and now I got the following.

Am satisfied with the condition of the item and willing to offer you an amount of $395 including packing materials without you paying for shipping cost or charges due to the fact that I already posses an account with FedEx.I'm from the Kansas City, aslo an Expectant Mother ( PREGNANT ).I would have loved to come by and check it out but due to my health status,it won't allow Me.I think i can go ahead to make your payment as soon as you get back. i'll arrange to send you a postal money order via (United States Money Order). so i'll need your payment information, which is your full name and address where you want USPS postman to come deliver it to you.
Moreso,I want you to know you're getting this as a cash payment and signatory proof is required before delivery.Am presenting this unit over to a Neigbour's Son schooling abroad as a Bithday gift coming up sooner. I am a busy kind of person and also would really appreciate it if we can deal on trust and transperency...,also would love to do paypal but it sucks...take a look here (www.paypalsucks.com) .you can take the unit off craigslist and get back so i can be rest assured it's fully mine,I'll be waiting to read from you.

What do you all think?

There should be an 800 number for people to call with stupid questions like this one. It'll just keep you on hold forever, thus keeping you out of productive society and away from the rest of us.

I'm selling the item for $350 and she only wants to send me a check for $395... I would have expected a $1000 check lol

1. It's a "gift" for somebody abroad
2. She's sending you a prepaid Fedex label
3. It's obviously a fill-in-the-blanks response ("I am from the Kansas City")
4. They confuse methods of payment (MO then cash)
5. They never mention the item by name (she calls it a "unit")
6. Weird words are capitalized (neighbor and birthday)
7. They want to avoid any method of payment that might let you get your money back

There's 7 things I picked out immediately from the response, without even getting into spelling and other problems. These are also the most common problems you'll find in almost every scam response.

I wasn't going to even sell it to her. I want to do it local, face to face.
anyways what should I do now, should I string her along or what?

My buddy at work recently had to deal with a scam also. He was selling a car and the presume buyer sent him a bank cashier check. He has contacted the FBI.

Technically USPS Money orders are accepted as cash payments. But yeah this is a scam.

You can't cash a MO just anywhere though, and when you do cash them they generally have your name/address on it, and the place that cashes it wants to know that you're local. Not quite as nice as cash, but close. Plus, once it gets to the PO for reimbursement, and it turns out to be a fake (which they always are), they have your name and address on it to come back to for the money, same as a bounced check.

I ALWAYS take USPS money orders to a PO to cash, and tell them I got it in payment for something online, and to please verify the serial on it as being valid before cashing it. They can punch it in and know instantly if it's real or not, while banks and grocery stores and other MO cashing places can't.

Pretend you're a star and this scam is the National Enquirer. The more you yell and scream, the more you realize you're just blowing hot air at a problem that will just go away on it's own.

Remember, if you let it get to you ... the terrorists win.

Thats why its accepted as a cash payment. A USPS money order can be cashed in just about any town/city in the US.

It sounds like a scam, but how do you scam someone with a USPS money order??

I mean, can't you wait til you have the money order... verify that it's good at the post office, then cash it; and then ship the item??

pay first, confirm payment, ship item with tracking and perhaps insurance, keep in touch upto the time he/she receives item. deal finished and should be closed. communication is necessary if he/she has any questions regarding order/payment and item.

as easy as that. any more complicated, fight with tooth and nail.

If you're smart.

But if on the other hand, you're dumb, then you'll deposit it at the bank, thinking it's as good as cash, ship out the item, and find out in a couple days the money order was fake.

I know when I used to get postal money order selling stuff here and I took them to the post office the very first thing they did was check it out in some book before cashing it. They always whiped out some book and looked at something. Somehow they must have found a way to forge them, and some have gotten past even the post office. They will have your name and addy on it so if they find out later it was a bad MO I wonder if they can come to you can ask for the money back?

This was my first thought as well, however upon further reflection I'd say forget it & find somone local with cash ... why take the chance.
