I have a problem running lower resolutions than the native 1680x1050 on a new Samsung widescreen 226BW 22" LCD monitor. To be able to see everything well enough for desktop use, I need to run a lower resolution than the native 1680x1050, but when I do everything either looks slightly too wide or too tall. I can't find another resolution in the list that has the same 1.6 to 1 aspect ratio as the native resolution. Scaling is turned on in the ATI Catalyst Control Panel, and I have the newest video card drivers.

Does this problem happen to everyone else who can't use the native resolution on a widescreen, or would a newer video card give me more resolution choices? I have a Radeon 9800 Pro.

Generally all LCDs look pretty shitty when not run in their native resolution, particularly with desktop usage. Your best bet would be to run at native resolution and then increase the fonts to a point it was easier to read. If you really want to use the lower resolutions, maintaining the aspect ratio will at least prevent things from being totally out of whack. Resolutions below 1680x1050 that share the same aspect ratio are 1440x900 and I believe 1280x720.
