http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...l-debate-bill-to-block-porn-on-new-computers/

"A South Carolina politician is hoping to stop computer owners in his state from viewing pornography.

State Rep. Bill Chumley, a Republican from Spartanburg, told his hometown newspaper that his Human Trafficking Prevention Act would require manufacturers or sellers of computers or other devices that access the Internet to install digital blocks to prevent the viewing of obscene content. Blocking websites that facilitate prostitution would also be required, he said.

If a purchaser wants the filter lifted, he or she has to pay $20 to have it taken out—provided the person is over the age of 18.

In Chumley's view, blocking people from seeing pornography will, somehow, "be another way to fight human trafficking."

"The human trafficking thing has exploded," Chumley told the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. "It's gotten to be a real problem." He continued:

It’s where almost everybody has access to a computer now. It’s porn on demand. We have to start somewhere... We’re bringing attention to it. We’re not being political. It’s an issue I’m pretty passionate about.

Chumley provides no explanation of how his filtering scheme would work or how it would avoid conflicting with the First Amendment. The Post and Courier reports that the bill has been submitted to the House Judiciary Committee, where it will be considered when state legislators come back to Columbia next month for their 2017 session."

Why is this guy in office? He is clearly....clueless. I'd be looking to get him ousted right away. Not because of his views on porn, but his clear stupidity and lack of research on the subject(s).

Did anyone ask him how the drug war is working out?

the same asshole said this about the Dylann Roof massacre...

"These people sat in there and waited their turn to be shot, that's sad. Somebody in there with a means of self-defense could've stopped this."

The guy is coming up on 70 years old and doesn't understand that what he wants to do is technologically impossible, let alone unconstitutional. He wasn't even smart enough to ask someone who would know better, like the average 12-year-old, before going public with his stupid plan. I hope he is laughed out of office, but the folks who voted for him probably don't understand the way the world works any better than he does.

He is probably the smartest Republican in the entire state.

Sarcasm?

But if he does actually understand that the bill is doomed to failure, and is using this as a stunt to "bring awareness" to the problem of human trafficking, he is equally a misguided fool. A fool stunt like this only reflects poorly on those who are actually fighting against human trafficking.

Not at all. Ever been to SC? The fact that this guy can read/write puts him way ahead of most of them.

I think SC should turn off their internet until they get this whole pornography thing figured out.

Putting aside all of the monstrous technical issues with this, how is this even supposed to work? People not viewing porn results in less sex trafficking? What does he think happens with porn exactly? After watching a video there's a number you can call to buy the porn actresses?

If anything, the prevelance porn more likely reduces prostitution and sex trafficking...
