SBS2008 sloooooooooow

Using an SBS2008 server as a file server but this thing is slooooooow.
Takes 15-20 minutes to reboot, etc.

How can I speed this up? What unnecessary SBS crap can I uninstall?

This is literally being used as a DUMB NAS with 15 users configured to determine file access.

No domains, no exchange, etc. nothing.

Unfortunately you will have to live with it, I work with a customer that has it as well.

About the only thing you can do is disable the exchange services if you are not using it
and also maybe some of the sharepoint services a well.

Not sure if this will break stuff but its worth a shot

Unfortunately you cannot really removed them as they are tightly integrated.

Thanks for the response.
Might look into just installing a plain version of windows on it then (prob Win7 or Win8).
Apparently there is no limitation on the number of user accounts (aside from each taking up 1GB of space) which would allow me to set up shares with per user account permissions.

SBS 2008 has been a reasonable performer provided that you have enough RAM.

8 GB at the very least if not more. Windows 7 or 8 will have a hard coded limit of how many open connections you can have. I believe that is 10. Why not look at something like Freenas if all you need is a file server.

You can create all the accounts you need, it is fairly simple to manage and the documentation is pretty good. I have done this for other small offices that need a file server and that it.
