SBLive causing slowdown?

Just upgraded to a Celeron 566, overclocked it to 808 MHz (wasn't stable @850 😛 ), and got a brand new IBM 75GXP 30 gig HDD. Everything is fine, I reinstall Windows and I start reinstalling my drivers. Everything is really snappy; I mean, *fast*. I think it's the HDD more than the CPU, because Windows loads in like 30 seconds, and the Celly isn't *that* quick.

Then, I install the drivers for my SBLive Value (JUST the drivers, not Liveware), and I notice it seems to take longer to boot. And then I'm absolutely positive it takes longer to log into my LAN - before, when the login/password screen popped up, I could click OK immediately; now, it hangs for a few seconds before it registers keystrokes or mouse clicks. And Windows seems *slightly* slower during normal operations than it was before the sound card was installed.

Has anyone seen this? Is it just an unfortunate side effect of the sound card, or is there something I can do to avoid or minimize it? I understand that everything in the machine is going to pull resources, but damn, it seems that the soundcard pulls more than anything else, or even everything put together (video, networking, etc.). BTW, I have 256MB/RAM, so it's not that. Just hoping for a few thoughts, and wondering if anyone else w/a SBLive experienced slowdown.

i have the same problem. It loads super slow after the sblive value is installed. I have taken it out a couple of times and removed all software and drivers. It seems to be loading the sblive software.
i went to start and typed in msconfig in run. I clicked startup tab and then deselected the audio hq and creative drivers. It loads a little faster. I'd say about 7 seconds.

There might be other problems with the drivers or conflicts.
Keep me posted.

Yeah, I think sb drivers and liveware will cause a slow down in boot up. if you want, disable the whole system sound. you should see some spee dup there.

Well, I've solicited a number of opinions on this, and all indication is that it'll do that - SBLive slows your computer down, and if you like the card there's nothing you can do. Feh. But, eh, it's a nice card, so I guess I can live with it. 😛

Romini:
Erm, what? Disable the whole systme sound? Unless I'm misunderstanding you, doesn't that utterly and completely defeat the purpose of having sound in the first place?

no, as far as i kow, by "system cound" i mean those sound you hear when you boot up the computer and entering win98. sure i am not talking about disabling all the sounds 🙂

i read about that over at tweak3d.net. in one of the optimization guide, it menions that disabling the system sound would speed up the system. if you need precise link, let me know and i will dig it up, but that's where i read about it.
