Yeah, it was posted a few times already, but it is a great deal. The 1500/256 package that I used to pay $59.95 for is now $39.95....can't beat that :)

A friend of mine just got a call from SBC offering them the 1500k package for $20/month for 1 year. This is in Michigan, so I'm not sure if this offer is just regional, but it may be worth giving them a call about (its not on their website at this price, its a special offer they called him with).

I'm close to switching to this plan, but have a few questions.

1. I was curious what domain is used for sbc-yahoo email addresses. Will I be user@sbc.net? user@sbc-yahoo.com?

2. The SBC DSL service comes with 'nationwide dialup access', but it's not clear whether they have a dial up network that you can use on the road, or if they are just providing a web portal that lets you access your mail.

3. How hard is it to ditch all the Yahoo content (personalized browser, etc..)? Can I just configure vanilla IE to use the service?

Can anyone with the service clarify these points?

Thanks.

1. user@sbcglobal.net
2. I don't know exactly what dialup network they have, I think I read that you get 20 hours a month of dialup. I would presume to be just like a regular dial up service since they do offer only dialup.
3. just go to the control panel and remove programs. I removed most of it except for the connection status. So it's pretty easy.

I just ordered this last week and I calling right now to ask if they can adjust the price. The price last week for the Standard Plus Package was $34.95 a month and now it went down to $29.95.

Why are they offering the Standard Plus Package & the Basic Package at the same price? Same price, SPP => no brainer. Anyone have the SPP, how is it? I have Road Runner cable through Time Warner. I am cancelling them, & getting the same service thru Earthlink for $29.95/mo for 6 mos.

You have to make sure your comparing apples to apples here. They have a plan that offers 384-1500/128 for $29.99, and one that's 768-1500/256 for $39.99. The 384-1500/128 gives you average DL speeds of 700 or less (unless you're right next store to the telco CO), so that might be the one he got for $20. You have to be a student in a certain marketing region to get that rate.

I got unlimited dialup with mine...I just use my @ameritech.net email address to log in (I've had the service for a while...I have an old style email address). Not sure if they changed it.

Damn. Just got off the phone with the rep. Can't change it to $29.95 because the service activation was yesterday, so my account is already active. Rep was pretty nice, hold time was not all that long (3 min 1st rep, 20 second 2nd rep).

They told me the distance was 9400' from the box

i pay for 768/128 and get 480/78 on various speedtest sites. my pings are high (100-150) and my download speeds suck. worst of all, if more than one stream (like shoutcast) is in progress, everything else slows down to a crawl even though shoutcast realistically uses no more than 15kb of bandwidth/sec.

to top all that off with a cherry, i am about 500ft from the co.

Man... I'm in Austin, TX. I paid for the "up to 1500 UP/128 DL" plan. I signed on almost 2 years ago. I'm paying $50/month.

But I get 1.2Mbps sustained download, and about 92kbps upload (UL a bit slow for some of the work I do, but hey... what can I do). So, I'm very happy with the DL speed.

I have no clue how far away from the Telco I am, but I must be friggin' close.

Damn...

I just got off the phone with SBC. THey could NOT give me the lower rate because I renewed my contract last month @ $34.95/mo. They said they were unable to extend the contract to give me the lower rate.

Once that contract is locked in, I guess you're set at that price for the whole year :(

Oh well, I guess I'll be stuck paying $34.95/mo until May 2004 :(

Damn I wish they offered SBC Yahoo DSL in my area, $30/mo for 1 year is HOT!

Guess I'll jump on the Earthlink DSL offer instead.

that's still a pretty decent price compared to comcast cable. $45/mo for cable tv subscribers, $54/mo for non-sub.

im moving soon and will probbly take that promo comcast has right now for $19.95/mo for 5 months. hopefully there will be a better deal out by then.

A few things here from my past experiences (I had SBC Yahoo DSL and moved to an area where it is not available yet):
  1. If you are running XP, you do not need their glut of software that loads. Just go to here for instructions.
  2. If you are not running XP, you need to use their software to install (I think). Then, delete all of the extraneous garbage except for DSL Connection Manager.
  3. If you are a Usenet junkie like me, and want to use your own reader to read Usenet, their server blows. They are missing many groups. They claim that the reason for this is that they don't carry groups that appear to be duplicates. They will add a group for you if you ask (and can convince them that it has unique content), but I found it to be severely lacking.
  4. If you already have a Yahoo mail account (this includes @rocketmail.com and others too), DO NOT combine your accounts. If you do, and later drop SBC Yahoo, you will have to pay a monthly access charge to read your previously free email account. I believe the charge is $9.95 per month.

Even with all this said, $29.95 is a good price, and if it were available at my house, I would probably do it. Cox charges me $39.95 per month, plus I have to have their minimum package ($15.95 plus tax) which I do not even use, so I am paying nearly $60 a month for cable-modem access... :disgust:

CO distance here at DSL Reports. Click on the CO name link and a map will appear with the physical address of the CO. Enter that address into mapquest and you know exactly where it is.

Heck with software...just head over to the Belkin thread and pick up a cheap router. :)

Beware, after one year, they begin charging your regular price for their services, bringing your bill up to $50/month.

Rock on! I have had SBC (was Ameritech) DSL account for 2 years now and I've been paying $49.95. I called and without any trouble or arguing at all they lowered me to $29.95 for one year AND bumped my download speed up from 768 to 1.5meg. But they still haven't fooled me into switching to a "Yahoo-SBC" account. Ha.

I'm OK with being bumped back up to $49.95 after a year... I'll just watch for another year-contract deal and try to lower it again. If you're already a customer and you're calling to change your account, don't call their main phone number - they told me to call 1-877-870-9582.

You must be a cable user. Please advise how I can connect to DSL without the connection manager or by using the instructions posted by aperry?

Most routers offer PPPoE, which is the standard that SBC uses. You have to have a login and password, but it is usually pretty easy to configure.
