SBC telephone customers

I was having problems with my line at a new house and called SBC to cancel the account. Apparantly as part of customer retention against defection to Cable phone providers, SBC has a unspoken policy to allow $6 off each month for 6 months to anyone that calls to cancel their phone line and claim they are moving to cable.

Any SBC customers can call and see if you cab get in on this.

YMMV

i wonder if they have this deal for universal lifeline members. i'd be paid $.60 every month ;p

My SBC phonebill is only $44.86 a month and includes my DSL and unlimited local plan.

That's less than all my friends pay for Comcast or RCN Cable Internet alone. My DSL has also been reliable (has never 'gone down') since I worked the bugs out the first week I had it (had a wet line on the exterior I had to cut from the system...causing interference.)

The best part is I'm looking into Satellite TV through SBC and Dish Network which will further discount my phone bill and give me basic satellite for <$30/month installed.

I'm no SBC fan (for political reasons) but I hate cable companies. I've been screwed hard by Wide Open West and Comcast/AT&T cable in the past just watching fee's increase every year (sometimes every few months) that I just gave it up and got some bunny-ears...

I'm ganna give this a try, 6 bucks is 6 bucks 😉

What's a universal lifeline member?

Universal lifeline offers discounted rates to low income people.

Sounds good but you got to be on welfare to automatically qualify and if you're on low income well you gotta to let them be the judge whether to lower your phone bill or not.
I think it's something like 5.50 vs 15.50, a saving of 10.00
To qualify on low income you gotta be really poor like a homeless bum using pay phone to make calls 🙂

You don't let them be the judge whether to lower your phone bill or not. You just have to prove you meet low income criteria. Don't just spout opinion. Put some facts out here for people to see. This is what I found:

For the unlimited flat rate, the price is 50% off the standard, monthly rate. In CA it's 5.34 instead of 10.68. For 60 measured calls per month, it's 2.85 and if you go above 60 calls, it's 0.08 extra per call. Here's an SBC link here

From the website:

lDo You Qualify for Universal Lifeline?
To qualify for Universal Lifeline service, you need to meet the following three requirements:

1) Your gross annual household income (the income you pay before taxes) must not be more than the Universal Lifeline service income limits. Please see the table below.

Lifeline Service Income Limits

Size of Houshold Maximum Annual Income
1 - 2 people $20,100
3 people $23,700
4 people $28,400
For each additional person over 4 people, add $4,700

2)The household in which you are applying for Universal Lifeline Telephone Service must be your primary residence. Additionally, your household may not already have Lifeline service.

3) You cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's income tax return.

I don't understand these huge telephone companies--they get too big and are broken up and then they merge to form even bigger monopolys. Not to mention their horrible customer service (that includes SBC--my former telephone company (before sunrocket)).

There are lots of low income people in America including myself that never got this rate if you don't apply for it because most do not know about it. So it so much hassle just for a little savings!

This doesn't even make up for how much we pay in taxes either, just pocket change and you have to beg for it like beggars
PS: It sucks to be poor.
Ain't that the truth?
