SBC DSL Users. Does your WAN IP Address change 3 or 4 times a week?

I don't get it, none of the DSL or Cable services that i'm aware of in NJ changes more than 2 or 3 times a month. What is the TTL out there that the IP address would change so frequently.

ok, let me start from the beginning, My brother has DSL service out in CA, SBC service, and he keeps complaining that the IP address changes too frequently, i'm like, dynamic IP addresses all change, it's no big deal, but i've been trying to set him up with a Dynamic DNS service and i've noticed that it would change WHILE i was setting him up. i mean 2 changes in 1 day is LUDICROUS.

Is this typical out there or is it a technical issue that he should bug them about.

I can't believe it would change so frequently.

well, i was logged in terminal services and it changed WHILE i was logged in and disconnected me, you don't find that more than just a bit annoying?

Yes but you are not supposed to be running servers, and terminal services is a serving program.

Remote Desktop then. guess what, that's NOT a serving program.

Well, the way I had it explained to me by AT&T cable was that if I could log into my computer remotely, then my home computer was a server. Granted it's not SBC DSL, but they may have a similar policy. Anyway, they probably do this to discourage servers using dynamic dns services. I would look over your agreement and see if it states a specific ip lease period, otherwise you are screwed because ip changes will not affect what they want you to do online which is web browsing and email.

actually u can try and complain about that...not that they will heed it but u can complain.
Don't say anything about TS or server stuff, just say when they do that it drops your connect,
leading to broken downloads, music streams, page loads...overall a very annoying lower level of
satisfaction. When they IP change u in the middle of a session it usually means a broken connection
albeit for maybe a few seconds but enough to disrupt a download, a session.
Explain that to them...usually in a dynamic ip situation, ip changes should only happen on startup/link,
not during sessions.

Don't roll your eyes so fast there, partner. RD uses the Terminal Services protocol and is in essence the same thing, except only allows a single session.

Anyways, ipconfig /all and see what your lease time is. And give DynDNS another shot.

BTW, wrong forum.

I don't know if this will help your brother Lee or if its even what your looking for. I actually never tried the software but check it out.
