i'm looking to build a server to hold streaming video. when it gets full, it loops over and overwrites the oldest data first.

since i want it to be able to record for a while, i'm looking at building it using 2 tb harddrives in raid. (i want raid for redundancy. so if a disk died while i was out, it continued recording.) since i have to boot windows off the harddisks (software requirement, can't use linux. windows only) i can't use dynamic disks. (i also don't want to be dependent on a third disk not failing during that time.) so i have to use onboard fake-raid.

i'm too cheap to pay for TLER disks.

so basically, i'm asking if non-tler disks will work for fake raid1? i'm intending on building it using an athlon II x4 (or x3), and an asus 785G board.

i know if i was doing strictly software raid, then non-tler disks would have absolutely no problem. (in fact, i'm doing that right now, and have done so on several other computers.) but since i'm forced into using fake raid, i'm not entirely sure.

The biggest difference between fake and true hardware RAID is that the CPU handles most of the load. As long as your server does not perform other tasks you should be fine although Time Limited Error Recovery disks would be nice to have.

PS
I think that you should have posted this over at the Memory and Storage forums.

i know what TLER stands for. and i know what the difference between fakeraid and hardware raid is.

i'm asking if fakeraid (Specifically AMD's fakeraid) benefits from TLER or not.

regarding the load on the server, there's no parity calculations to make. and i'm using a vastly over-specced CPU for my purposes. so i'm not one bit worried about that end. my only concern is whether or not computer's gonna be failing disks from the array due to overrunning the error recovery time or not.

I've been using non TLER disks in 95 percent of the RAIDs that I've set up and I can't remember any issues because of them. The vast majority of the problems that I have encountered were caused because of buggy software. Unfortunately my experience is largely with intel chipsets and I can't really comment on AMD's solutions.

However, since the majority of disks out there are non TLER, it would be unthinkable for AMD to advertise RAID capabilities if they can't deliver. One can argue tho that these are consumer and no server class hardware but I still don't believe that this could be an issue.

What is the difference between fakeraid and software RAID or is that the same thing?
