Can you explain how this is any better than whatever 3 dollar/month cable modem they rent you is? I can see that this pays for itself after 2 years, but are there any other tangible benefits (i'm asking because I honestly don't know)?

Some modem rentals are more expensive. Or if you have an older modem and want to have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

i have an older motorola sb model. im pretty sure it doesnt have DOCSIS 3.0.
currently, im getting 22Mbps with Comcast in philly. would this modem increase the speed further???
