SB X-fi Extreme Gamer sound card too quiet in Vista

Motherboard: MSI X58 Platinum SLI
Sound Card: Creative LAbs Sound Blaster X-fi Xtreme Gamer
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium

There is onboard sound. It automatically disables when I installed the sound card. I installed the software in Safe Mode. I used the Vista specific drivers on the CD that came with the card. I went to the Creative Labs website and updated the drivers. At a volume on 100% I can barely hear any sound. I'm using head phones but tried speakers and still nothing. I messed around with all the sound related settings, equalizer, volume, bass etc.. and nothing changed. I can't get sound out of my sound card. What am I missing? Does Vista not work with sound cards? Anything I can do to get this to work?

Thanks for any help, suggestions.
