SB-Live X-Gamer Vs SB-Live X-Gamer 5.1

What exactly is the difference between these 2 cards? I have the original x-gamer card.

Are any of the inputs different on the 5.1 card?

The only difference on Creatives website is that the 5.1 card has Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding.

Can't I just hook my sound card up to my amplifier that supports 5.1 and get 5.1 audio on my DVD's?

Stefan I replaced my SB Live X-Gamer with a X-Gamer 5.1 same outputs on the card the only difference i know of is the addition of 5.1 decoding. Oh yea my original SB card died a horrible death that why i replaced it.

The 5.1 can output 6 discrete channels (either analog or through the mini-DIN). The non 5.1 can only output 4 discrete channels.

Both cards are fully capable of outputting a 5.1 Dolby Digital encoded stream, if you have an external decoder for it.

So if I connect my non-5.1 X-gamer to my 5.1 AMP, then I can listen to movies in 5.1?

What else other than DVD outputs 5.1?

Absolutely.

There is a game or two....but not much. But if you use a software DVD decoder you can use the 5.1 analog outputs for DVD playing if you have speakers with 5.1 inputs but no decoder. But since you have a decoder already it's nothing you need worry about.
