I'm running a home-built K6-2 500 system with a DFI K6BV3+/66, which has a VIA MVP3 chipset, using Win98 SE. I had a Sonic Impact S90 sound card installed in this system, but I recently installed a game for my son which comes with DirectX 8.0 and we installed that. The S90, according to Diamond, doesn't support DirectX 8.0, and they do not plan on providing a BIOS or driver upgrade to make it so. So I bought a Live! Value card...and of course, after I installed it, I discovered that this card has a problem with VIA chipsets. Mainly, noise.
I've installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and I believe I have the latest Live! Value driver version. I've gone in and tried disabling the DOS emulation in the card in the Device Manager. I've tried moving the card to a lower PCI slot. I've disabled both serial ports, hoping to free up some IRQs. Some games will go fine (including my son's latest game), but others will generate a lot of static.
I've thought about lifting the sound card out of its PCI slot and putting a P-III system under it, but I can't justify the expense (yet). I really don't want to throw any more money at the thing. Sound Blaster doesn't seem to want to address the issue with VIA chipsets and Live! noise. There doesn't seem to be a quick fix.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Yes, it's an old system on a dying platform, I know this. I'm just trying to extend the life of what used to be a very adequate computer. Thanks, all...
