My solution used to be simple, just don't install the #$%&*^ Sounblaster software. Now with all the environmental speakers I'm finding that I have to install the creative software to run the Surround speakers and of course with that the conflict with the Desktop themes and such. Anyone have a quick fix? Thanks
 
Try disabling SB 16 Emulation under Creative Miscellaneous Devices in Device Manager and removing all soundblaster entries in autoexec.bat. This cures most lockup problems. SB 16 Emulation is only used for very old games that run under pure DOS (not a DOS Window), so it is generally not required.
