SB Live 5.1 and Windows ME No sound....stumped!

My neighbor just got a new Gateway 933 P3 with a sb128 in it. He bought a SB Live! 5.1 X-Gamer and I went to install it for him. All went well with the uninstall of the SB 128 and the install of the SB Live or seemed to anyway. Device manager picks everything up with no conflicts and all the SB software sees the card, but no sound.
I have tried all PCI slots and reinstalling the card several times, I even called Gateway tech support (hey it's worth a shot) to no avail. I suspect Windows ME is the problem, which tends to be the case more often than not. Am I missing something here? I checked out Creatives site and the way I took it the drivers on the CD are the most recent ones.
Anybody else run into this? I am going to install the card in one of my PII 400 Win98 machines to verify the card, but I don't think the card is really bad. Any insight would be greatly appriciated right now because I am stumped.

Maybe you selected the output to be digital only?
If that is the case you won't get anything from pluging in speakers to the analog output in the card.

Double click on the little speaker icon in the system tray and see if sound is actually being fed to the card. There should be an option in Advanced Properties that you can turn on/off for "Digital output" only

I took a look in that direction and there was no check in that box. Thanks though any other ideas? I also just confirmed that the card is good, installed and great sound in Win98SE PII 400.

I have me and it works fine for me. Did you install the drivers and the SOFTWARE? I know that sounds stupid but.....

Well, a guy down the hall from me (ah, dorm life) had a bad power supply and it kept him from getting sound. I doubt that's the case here, but who knows, maybe the 5.1 cards pull a little more juice? Good luck troubleshooting that, though.

Gplracer the first time I tried to install the 5.1 I installed everything on the install CD. These last few times I just did the drivers only which will still give you basic sound.
Rojay, the thought of an underpowered PS hadn't crossed my mind. But I just tested the card with drivers only in my PII 400 with a 250Watt PS and worked ok. Something to keep in mind though thanks! Ya, I need all the luck I can get to troubleshoot this one, that is why I turned to you guys, cause I am out of ideas. Good stuff guys thanks!! Keep 'em coming 🙂

Well, don't want to make you feel stupid, but, did you install the right driver? The Win9x drivers don't work with WinME. You have to use the WDM Win2k/WinME driver set to get it to work... just a thought, as a SB Live! Value I bought for my sis had 2 discs.

Yeh, im with Mr bios here. Make sure you have THE ABSOLUTELY latest driver. I had probs with my live in ME until i tried a newer driver direct from the creative site

the drivers for the 5.1 cards are on the cd that comes with it doods
there are no other drivers availble people creative doesnt have drivers for u to download at all for the 5.1 cards

Hmmm...Creative Lab's page says that the ME drivers are not applicable for 5.1 users...but it doesn't say anything about the 9x drivers...but if ME requires different drivers...then D'OH!
