SB-E stuff is pretty pricey right now. I'm not as familiar as a lot of you guys are with new architecture launches, so how long is something out before it starts coming down in price? How long does it take to snag the early adopters before sales slow and they have to start dropping prices?

They might be jacking prices up a little to take adavantage of people who absolutly must have the new socket everytime it comes out but if you are expecting something like a 20% drop in price then you will be waiting a long time. Best bet would be to keep your eye out for combo deals.

If there is any price drops coming for new X79 boards I would expect that you might see them dropping on Black Friday or maybe the first week or two in December. Right now a lot of the supply is fairly limited on the X79 boards and the Intel Core i7-3930K and the Intel Core I7-3960X Extreme Edition processors so it may take a bit for them to drop in price.

Along the same lines, is there going to be a new chipset for Ivy Bridge-E, or is X79 it for the next two years? I ask mainly because if X79 is it for a while it definitely makes the pricing a bit easier to swallow.

so how long is something out before it starts coming down in price?

about a month generally before prices have their "early adoptor" tax removed. But that depends on availablity then. If stock is hard to come by, prices could go up as well.

Expecting a 20% is proberly not going to happen, and even then it will be a shop based sale more than a across the range price change. For this country (Non-US), it will be after chrismas at a guess, and given availability of hardware then, proberly late janurary or early Feburary.

if you want a $100 price drop on boards, I think you are going to be dreaming for a long time.

Guys I am sorry but I am really not allowed to post information on future products(and a lot of the time I really don't know). When it comes to desktop chipset and boards we run a 1 year cycle on them with a couple boards having a longer lifespan to help with business planning. These boards are listed on our extended life cycle plan. The X58 chipset was the exception to this rule, in that it was released Q4/08 and before it is officially EOL it will have a lifespan of over 3 years. Do I know that the X79 will last that long? Nope, but it looks like there is a good chance that it will have a longer than normal lifespan based on this spaces boards in the past.

I was an early adapter for p67, and paid less than the price finally settled down to, so it seems there isn't really a pattern you can count on.
