C2 3930K here. Source of this guy's chip is a little cherry though imo, his chip is an ES

That said those are the best settings I have seen for a SB-E running 5ghz. Before this on C1 chips, the best I have seen is a 3960X doing 5 @ 1.45. Intel gave me an RMA for C2 as well, a pity, I voided my standard warranty already. I have a PTPP though, maybe a few high voltage runs at some point will nuke this puppy and I will RMA...

looks like quad channel is not worth it,I wish intel would put out a 6 core on 1155.

I can beat that bandwidth and latency with my 2600k

I think that is a bunch of crap. There is always 1 review site that comes out and says something like this for whatever reason.

The cache works at the SAME speed. Every screenshot and test I have ever seen proves this. And I will prove it when I get my x79 system this Sunday.

The only question is the quad channel memory. Some benchmark programs do not display the proper results for some reason. Only Sandra seems to give the correct bandwidth results. I doubt the CPUs will throttle the memory bandwidth based on what programs it is running. (I would not be surprised if Intel did do that.)

I usually tend to sell my stuff when I upgrade so I jumped on the opportunity to sell my C1 and get a C2. I think down the line the C2 will have better resale value than a C1.

Got my new C2 installed. It is doing 5ghz with 1.41, my C1 needed 1.48 for 5ghz. No time to verify full stability yet, but 10 runs in linx 4096mb stable.

Grain of salt disclaimer that it is very well not the stepping but just a better chip.

I was thinking about not going through my build but hearing that the C2 stepping really helps makes me really want to build a SBE system

Received my new C2 today ..

Haven't played with OC yet but the default 3.5g Vcore is 1.17. No guarantee of low Vcore at higher clocks, but a good start ..

Missed this thread for a while! So my chip is 'general use stable' @ 5ghz with 1.41, meanung I can game and do general tasks. It will pass linx, but fails prime95 small ffts and blend? I need 1.45 to get stable in those tasks. So I am running 4.8 @ 1.38.

Even under water the chip still gets hot under a prime load - 53 to 63 depending on the core, at stable 5ghz it gets up to 57 to 68. These chips get pretty hot compared to SB. Would like to see some temp comparisons at the same speed and voltage of a 3930/3960 to 3820.

My 3820 @ 4.0Ghz runs at the same temps as my 2500K did @ 4.0Ghz on the Corsair H60. I am using 0.025 more VCore on the 3820 as well. I am very happy with the temps so far.

I don't see a lot of 3820's to compare to ..

I'm running 4.4g, 1.3 vcore - Folding@Home 24/7 ... Temps with H80 are mid to high 60's depending on ambient ..

I needed 1.36 to get stable at 4.6g .. Temps went to high 70's .

I'm good with 4.4g for what I'm doing.. My C1 needed 1.35 for 4.4g, so I feel the C2 is a nice improvement..


I would suspect your uber cooling contributes to your success, along with a nice slice of the silicon ...

I might be looking at buying a 3820 shortly with an asus P9x79 pro? Does anyone know if VT-d will work with this setup?

Also, I'm going to be using virtualization quite heavily. The main reason I'm looking at LGA2011 is the additional memory slots. I'll probably go with 4x8GB, so 1155/ivy bridge is still an option. The option to upgrade later would be nice though.

Although I'm using virtualization a lot, I'm not sure if I really need VT-d. I'll be using VMWare workstation 8. Does anyone know if this even supports VT-d? I'm not likely to be dedicating any devices to a guest like network cards, video cards etc. I'll be using virtual disks. Does VT-d offer any advantages in this scenario?

VT-d is for letting the VM use the part (graphics card, network card) directly, which at the same time means it can be only used on that VM. So it wouldn't provide any real benefit in that situation as far as I know.

Its for use more in a esx setup where you would only be accessing directly one VM at a time. For people wanting to run a gaming system within an VM, it would be a must. Like for example, I might decide that rather then use My Win 7 Ultimate as the host OS, I can still get pretty good results from having it be one of the VM's loaded into vsphere. This would work great for a scenario where you are trying to run active servers, and don't want a Windows crash to take down everything else.

Really? Where? And I am still curious how they get all the sounds and such piped out, I wouldn't think RDP would handle it fast/well enough (for gaming), could be wrong though

Again, if you've got a link to where people are doing this I'd love to review what they are doing. I have multiple ESXi boxes already

Sound has been working through VM's for a while now.
