sb-600 or sb-700

I am going to buy two flashes and was wondering if the sb-700 is really better than the older sb-600.

The sb-600 is $250 refurb.
The sb-700 is $290 refurb.

I was hoping somebody here had some real-world experience with these flashes.

I never liked the SB-600. It has a very cheap "made in China" feel about it and the menus are slow and quirky. The plastic seams creaky. It's worth noting that the SB-600 advertises a tiny bit more power, but it's probably not noticable.

If the extra cash won't hurt too much, the SB-700 is a much nicer unit.

I use the 600s as slave units and very rarely mount them on the camera. The times I have, I was always annoyed by the menu. It feels like one of Sigma's old units from 2003. Blech.

But... it DOES work quite well... so if you can find a used 600 for cheap, you could save a buncha money.

I had an SB-600. Paid $200 for it new earlier this year (new old stock at Best Buy) and IMO that's about how much it's worth. Not complaints about it, but it was a pretty basic unit. It amazes me how much profit Canikon are making off these Chinese flashes now (they're all made in China).

FWIW, I bought a Yongnuo YN565EX that has basically the same functions as the SB-600 I had, except better built and more power, for $150 off eBay. I'm not sure if they have the Nikon version out yet, but it's worth looking into.

I have a couple SB-600's, use them as CLS slaves. They work, get the job done. The menus are a little clunky but I don't spend much time in them aside from setup.

I don't know what problems people have with the sb600 menus. I have one, and I prefer the simplicity of it as opposed to the overly-complicated crap they try to make of the sb700 and sb900.

I have the 600 as well... No complaints here... It has served me tremendously well.

I suppose if I could trade it straight up for a 700 I probably would... but I wouldn't pay much for the trade.
