Just got a call from the vet that our 18 year old cat Pyewackett has reached the end of the line. She thinks he has bone cancer and there is nothing that can be done for him given his age. This never gets easy even when I know in my heart he has had a great long life. We will be going over at 11:00 to be with him for the end.

That's tough, man. We just had to put down my wife's 13-year-old Maltese.

At least you'll be with him at the end.

My condolences. We had our almost 14 year old siamese put down nearly a month ago.
It's a difficult thing to do even when you know it's the best thing for your friend.

So sorry. I'm sure you gave him the best life ever, and for that I'll bet he is eternally grateful.

Pyewackett looks like he is a gray Maine my excellent compatriot. We had one similar to him and he was named Turbo. His claim to fame was jumping up and turning on the wall light switch when he went into a room....

RIP Pyewackett....

Sorry to hear this. I lost all my three elderly cats within a few months and I know how devastating it feels when their time comes.:(

Pets are family. He will always be with you in spirit. You might even sense his presence around the house for a short while.

I lost my 18 year old cat this year too. Cancer as well. You're doing the right thing, and it's the hardest thing. Just be there for him, hold his paw, kiss his head. Tell him you love him. You gave him a long loving life. I miss Archie every single day, but he was seriously suffering, with no viable treatment available.
My heart goes out to you.

Sorry to hear. I lost my best little buddy of 18 year at the end of may. I had him since he was about a 4 week old kitten. It's tough but he's better off now.

He looks very much like my first cat, Abner. He was a long-haired cat with the same colors.

Your cat lived an extraordinarily long life, and I'm sure it was a happy one.

Sorry for your loss but maybe now you will have room in your home for one of the numerous cats that need one.

We already have 8 cats, and 4 dogs. This guy appeared in our lives one night when my next door neighbor came over to ask me for help with the pilot light on their furnace. When I left their house after getting it lit they asked me if that was my cat, I looked down and there was the gorgeous Maine my excellent compatriot kitten making a beeline for me. I sat on the porch with him for a few minutes but we assumed he belonged to someone in the neighborhood and didn't bring him in. He spent the next few minutes pawing at our kitchen window wanting to come in but finally gave up. We already had 3 cats, one of which had just been diagnosed with renal disease so we weren't really considering a 4th but the next afternoon one of the neighborhood kids knocked on our door with him and asked if he was our cat. We checked around the neighborhood for signs and asked around if anyone knew who he belonged to with no takers so off to the vet he went for his check and shots.

He was a big happy go lucky goof ball for most of his life, would purr anytime the least bit of attention was given to him. He passed peacefully over the bridge around 11:30 yesterday with my wife and I there to help him along.
