Say you had roughly $300-400 to spend on a watch...

why buy that for 450 when you can buy the original for 250?

I would not spend that much on a no name, plain watch. look at the islander series here, good and inexpensive for the features. you can get in to a sekio, or orient for less than what you linked also.
if you are looking for something unique, you can look at the importers, like trulesorub, russian market and there are others. I have a regulator from trulesorub, it has a small issue but was very cheap for what it is, and not worth sending back to Ukraine for them to look at. are lot of them are manual wind though.

i am also a big fan of citizen ecodrives for lower end watches. I have one of these as well, it was worn while working on oil rigs and is about as bomb proof as you can get.

and dont fall for a quartz watch that looks pretty. you can buy a decent looking quartz watch for under 100, timex has a bunch of options, and they are as good of a quartz watch as you can really get, if you want a good, reliable, and simple watch.

Thanks this is helpful. I really wasn't "considering" the watch I linked - it was just for example (I get spam from them all the time).
I do like that Timex you linked quite a bit.

... what would you get?

I generally like "basic" watches with simple faces/features. Something like these
I like a simple small field watch. My kids got me a seiko one that I've been happy with.
Of the ones in your link I really like this one...

If you had asked me 3-4 years ago, I would have gone with a Seiko Monster, one of the swiss movement Invictas, or really any swiss movement boutique watch (there's lots out there). 300-400, especially on the second hand market, can get you a very nice watch with an ETA automatic movement and sapphire glass.

Now, after having a garmin smart watch for a while, I'd probably say that. Activity tracking, sleep tracking, high battery life, and simple smart watch capabilities, and about the 300 price range with sapphire glass if you get a good deal.

I like regular watches, they are timeless. Checking the time is a quick glance at the wrist, plus it does look nice as as secondary benefit. It's nice to not have to take out your phone all the time, or if you are with someone it doesn't look like you are distracted by your phone when you really just need to see the time.

I have a Samsung Active 2 smart watch, but it rarely gets worn. They don't work so well if you have a winter where you live when you are on the go when long sleeves and jackets cover them making them annoying to fiddle with vs just glancing for the time. I'll try it more in the warmer weather when it's more convenient. If you really want to track fitness stuff, obviously a smart watch. The Apple Watches are probably the best functionally with an iPhone but they are fugly with those square faces. A round faced watch is infinitely more attractive, whether smart or dumb.

Personally if I had only one watch to choose at that price point I would get a nice simple metal band divers watch. I like the Eco-Drive stuff, never needs a battery charge and you don't have to wear it almost every day to charge it like an automatic, plus Quartz is more accurate. I put my couple Eco-Drives in the window to charge every few months just to keep them topped off. The Citizen promaster dive watches come in different styles at that price point, but I think a classic silver bracelet style goes with everything, you can dress it up or down

In 1985 you would have looked like a time traveler with something like that and it would have cost $7000 :D

I remember lusting over Pulsar watches at JCPenney in the late 70's that were in the $2000 range

This is the only watch I would consider wearing:

That's a nice looking watch. If I didn't have an Apple watch I'd get something similar to this. I usually get Fossil watches. They're pretty cheap but have a huge selection. If I had $300-$400 to spend I'd probably go with a Citizen.

For you watch wearers: Do you wear your watches with the face on the inside of your wrists (so your palm is facing up when you check the time) or out? I wear mine out, but my dad wears his in. Always thought it looked weird.

I'm going to put this here since slightly related. I'm considering spending $500 on a light saber. It's probably the dumbest thing I've considered spending serious coin on. Practical half of my brain almost has me talked off the ledge but the idiot side says, "that would be a cool thing to have"
