say you can't drive for 6 months. what happens?

  • i would be fine because i can just walk/bike/bus everywhere

  • i would need somebody to drive me in order to keep my job

  • i would lose my job and people would have to bring me everything

  • i would die from lack of resources (comedy option)

I would save oodles of money and probably lose a few pounds.

Or stay at home (olds basement) and grow my beard and eat ketchup packets.

Other than not taking the motorhome out until the weather gets nice...not a damned thing...except my wife will get mad having to drive everywhere...:p

We're SUPPOSED to go to a rally in Yellowstone in May...6 months will cramp that schedule a bit.

Sounds like a good idea actually - then I could bike to work and back for my workout and not have to drive to the gym. I'd also save money on gas, and save the Earth the harmful emissions. Hmm...

Well there's a bus every 5 - 7 minutes on weekdays (10 - 15 mins on weekends) just outside my apartment, so getting to work downtown isn't a problem. I could also just take the bicycle (~25 mins). From the train station in downtown there's a train every 30 minutes to Arlanda and Stockholm as well as several trains+buses to various smaller towns around the country every day. So I can basically go to anywhere in the world from the doorstep of my apartment building without driving.

Depending on my circumstances I'd probably cross my fingers and hope I don't get caught for 6 months.

I need a job to survive.

Would depend on the season. But I don't see how this would ever happen to me.

I don't drive to work because that would cause more problems than it would solve. Subway all the way, and if the weather is nice I'm taking out my bike.

More or less be Ok.
I ride the bus to work every day.
Wife is stay at home.
Groceries within walking distance.

Getting kids to school/events may be hard though I guess.

For daily needs, I'd start biking and/or taking the bus. It's a slow PITA from the 'burbs, but I'd survive. Recently built light rail line near me will finally be active next next year, so that would make things more tolerable. Could possibly convince work to allow me to just VPN from home.

Be hard for me to get to the mountains or anywhere else for recreation though.

I have stores within walking distance, but they wouldn't do me much good without a paycheck. My job is a 35 minute one-way commute on empty roads, double that with traffic, so nobody is going to haul my ass to work. Technically I could work from home every day, but as a manager that wouldn't fly with my boss. And the north end of town I live in is mostly light industrial companies, the tech companies are all either downtown or on the south end of the cities. I'd have to find a job pretty quickly that I could bus downtown for.

I have a coworker who lives just around the corner that could get me to the office, and on the days he's off I'd work from home.

To get stuff at the store, well... I'd have to ask him to stop at the store on our way home I guess.

Do you currently drive to work?
Yes. Work is 4am-1pm. So it's not really a good idea to bike in the dark and early. I could If I had too, like I mentioned. adapt to the situation and survive. But with my perfect driving record (no accidents, tickets, or otherwise) for the last +30 years, I don't see myself being issued a suspended driving license.
If that's the scenario OP means. But if 6 months because I'd be disabled/Illness, that would be a problem.

Same here. El or bike when it's above 30 degrees. :)

You're in Milwaukee? I didn't know people in Milwaukee actually rode the bus.

I couldn't drive my 5-speed Honda for many months after right shoulder rotator cuff surgery.

I ended up homeless living under a bridge.

I didn't start driving till I was 35. You adjust. The world is same size but time required to do tasks skyrockets.

No poll option for us. We'd just not be able to go to some of the kids' weeknight swimming or hockey practices (retired grandma down the road can drive us). I work at home and usually drive to kids activities before 5pm and my wife has her own car for our weekends but doesn't get home until 530 weeknights.

I did break my right foot and I couldn't drive for weeks, but just a minor inconvenience. I drove myself to urgent care the following morning... very carefully. ;)

I wouldn't be able to function. I have to drive to clients and my stores weekly.

I would move to the apt complex that is 3000ft from my work. Then I would get rides from a coworker who lives there.

My fiancee has no job so she could drive me to work for 6 months, but it would be quite awful. I would consider moving, but, houses near the office more or less million dollar type homes. Some 500K-750K price range, but, almost nothing "affordable" for a single income.

Not sure how or why I would lose the ability to drive but it would be awful.
