say if you are an admin in one place and cover many different softwares, vendorbased or otherwise, and then u've got an opportunity at another place, but it's for desktop, can't really touch servers cuz it's another group. not only that, ur the 'new guy' in the desktop group and so anything upward movement wise out of the group into something more substantial probably isn't gonna come ur way since the seniority game is probably in play.

no say the desktop spot will pay more than your admin gig. do you take it?

say u then put 2-3 yrs into this company, still stuck in desktop role cuz again - u were the new guy back then
and any of the few upward promotions went to guys that had more seniorty than you.

say you decide to leave,
would u not be concerned about how your resume will look if you leave the desktop job AS a desktop person
(since u prob. never stayed long enough to get moved out of the desktop spot?)

hence, would u take this new job? remember in this scenario, the destkop one pays more.

btw, if you've experienced something like this but not IT, feel free to relate because it doesn't have to be IT jobs.

thanks.

I would go for the job. Get the interview, and see if I get the job. If I do, I give my 2 weeks and leave the current job.

Then, at the new job, I will try to work the best I can, I would also after a few months, talk to my supervisor or team leader about my abilities and if I can use them. If so, I'll slowly work my way up from there. If I get the chance to show off any of my knowledge, I would do it without hesitating. Of course, I would not embarass any of my collegues as that may actually drop you down a few steps of the ladder. Instead, I would try to point things out to my foolish and dump A+ certified collegues. :D :D :D

Depends on what is more important to you--money or career advancement.

Personally, I would not take the job unless it paid A LOT more, like at least 25% more. If you take that job, future employers will wonder why you took a step down in the ranks when reviewing your resume. This may or may not be a bad thing.

"dump", eh?

Don't do desktop support for a company if you like money and career advancement.

hello, initially i didnt want to say what types of companies because i wanted to focus on the issue. but then gain it may well be important to consider the companies. but first, u all make valid points, true one concern is indeed why did you take a step down from where you were in going from admin responsibilities to desktop. in such a case a defense might be that in the admin position, staff was small so you wore many hats, in desktop company things were more structured, but still, accepting and doing a desktop position, why.

and i know the decision making is money important vs. career important. it's like being a glorified desktop person, underutilized, taking the money and run, or seeing things longterm, sticking with admin level title.

well, now about the companies. both are banks, both are foreign banks, that of the destop spot is probably somewhat better known, and hence would be a step up in branding on the resume, wouldn't it.

Depends what youre looking for in life. If you want to raise as high as possible on the corporate ladder, stay where you are. If you want or need more cash now, change jobs. If you want the least amount of responsibility for the same or more pay, change jobs.

Since the desktop spot is better known, pays more, and has less responsibility (usually a good thing), I'd say switch. You already have experience in server admin, so you'll get easily promoted when the times comes.

Ding ding we have a winner! Unless your current job gives you a nice raise, kiss them goodbye. What good is being an admin when they aren't paying you your due? I don't care if the desktop job is only a penny more. It's more, and it shouldn't be, take it.
