I think it depends if you just calmy cut off his hand, or you totally flip out and then cut off his hand. If you flip out, you're screwed.

Wizards can't use swords. You'll need to use a dagger, staff or hit him with the good old fireball spell.

But SORCERERS can use simple weapons, especially (my preference) spears...

So yea, you're good, as long as you're plaing 3.0 or higher...
 
But if he was a wizard he probably wouldn't have a samauri sword laying around, unless he killed a samauri and took a trophy, or if it had enchantments on it, or if he's just a poser.
