Normally, I'm all for speaking your mind about politics, but I'm pretty sure this isn't covered under free speech. Your thoughts?

Violence Directed at Jews Prompts Mayor to Propose Hate Crimes Unit
By MIKE MEYERS - Daily Cal Staff Writer - Friday, April 26, 2002

Berkeley may be adding a hate crimes unit to its police force in response to a rash of attacks against Jewish organizations in the city.
...
Within the past month, Berkeley Jewish institutions have been vandalized, and Jewish residents have been attacked on the streets.
...
"People are scared to let the community know they are Jewish," said Brandon Tuman, treasurer of UC Berkeley's Jewish Student Union.
...
Temple Beth El, Berkeley's largest Jewish temple, has received roughly 25 threatening phone calls in the past month, said Beth El Rabbi Ferenc Raj.

Last Friday, the temple received a call stating all Jews should be "annihilated" and "holocausted."
...
Berkeley Hillel, a resource center for Jewish students at UC Berkeley received a bomb threat last weekend, as did the synagogue Congregation Netivot Shalom. Hillel was also vandalized earlier this month with anti-Semitic graffiti painted on the property.

It's not... that's harassment, intimidation, and assault... plus a plethora of other things.

Crimes like that disgust me.

No...there's plenty of towns that think Israel is wrong where no one calls in bomb threats

<< That sucks....I thought people there are all anti-war/hate? >>

Nope, only when someone's views are the same as theirs.

I believe b0mbrman is referring to the well established anti-establishment culture in Berkeley.

How could this be? A Liberal dominated school participating in blatent Racism?

I mean by their own admission, Liberals are FAR more tolerant of differences races and social classes than ANYONE.

Geez.. blame on Gen X. They can't even do the peace movement right without screwing it up.

Well Berkeley is no longer the beacon of liberalism it once was. I am a student at UC Berkeley, and of course there still are the weird hippie liberalist peaceniks and whatnot, but that ideal no longer dominates the campus as a whole. I'd say the professors are more liberal then the students here these days. And just because something happens in Berkeley doesn't mean that "the peace movement" is responsible. One thing I do agree on is that people in Berkeley are nut jobs.

Are you trying to tell us that Berkeley is not dominated by Liberals?

Because if you are, you are WAY too close to the norm there ;)

<< KKK members are Conservatives. >>

Sadly enough, they do tend to vote conservative.

I don't see what that has to do with this conversation.

A Liberal dominated school participating in blatent Racism?

Where did the school say they advocate this? Where did you get the numbers that say a majority of Cal students advocate this? Do you even understand the situation in Berkeley or are you just jumping on the partisan "SEE WHAT HYPOCRITES THEY ARE?!" bandwagon.
