Say Hello

Just picked it up today at the gun store. It's a Smith & Wesson 686+ .357 magnum. It can also fire .38 special and .38 +Ps. Unfortunately, I have to take it back to the gun shop because it is missing the front sight. I picked it up for only $500 at a one day sale.

thats like a 4 inch barrel ? Me personaly, I woulda went with a 5"+ barrel for target shooting. oh, and you'll prob find yourself shooting more .38 ammo than .357 imo, because of the price difference.

Yeah, I was surprised at how much those .357 mags cost. I think I am going to have to start reloading.

As far as barrel length, I believe the 686 only goes from 2" to 4" to 6" (no 5") and my dad recommended the 4".

save the brass on factory rounds you happen to buy so you don't have to buy new ones if you decide to reload. Reloading can save you lots of money, but takes an initial investment for the equipment, of course.

No, I have no intention of killing anyone, if I did I certainly would not have bought my gun at a gun store whereupon a round is fired and sent to the police for ballistics data. For me the point of owning a gun is target shooting & home defense.

Also, I was thinking about becoming an armed guard because I heard they make pretty good money, at least more than unarmed.

Heh, my brother likes revolvers too, but I can't stand having that small of a capacity for rounds.

What do you have? A semi-auto with 15 round magazines? The truth of the matter is that in a gun fight you try to hit with your second shot. After that your chances of survival signficantly diminish anyways. If you aren't a good shot extra rounds aren't going to help you much.

I have revolvers and semi-autos I like shooting both of them but if push came to shove the revolver would be in my holster. I figure if I can't hit with 6 chances are with 10 or 15 I'm not gonna do much better. Plus there no safties, tap and rack drills or doohickies to mess with when you pull the trigger it goes bang if you have a misfire you just pull the trigger again. Just get a couple speed loaders if you're worried about capacity. :)

I agree. Guns have only one purpose and that's to kill. I don't understand why you all want/need one so bad.

Yeah, I got 4 speedloaders myself, and I'm going to buy a gun belt soon. Also, my 686+ is a 7 shot instead of 6, so I get 1 extra. :)

I have 5 guns 2 long guns and three pistols and only one is meant to kill and thats my 30-30. I just bought a shotgun because I want to get into trap shooting and I use my pistols for target shooting. The purpose of something is what you chose to do with it. Cars are meant to transport people but kill more than guns do. You can kill somebody with almost anything it's the person who decides what the purpose is not a hunk of metal.

Damn, I feel robbed! Wasnt Al Pacino's "little friend" an M16 with a grenade launcher attachment or something like that? With the assault weapons ban ending and everything, I was expecting to see something cooler than a big handgun :(

Quick, someone cheer me up with a picture of an exploding Honda Civic or something! :)

But typical doesn't mean ALL. I feel much more comfortable having the capacity to have extra rounds if needed. Why not just make guns with three rounds then? :p

The average may be three, but I'm sure there are lots of fights of 1, and plenty of fights of 7, 8, 9. Personally I don't have a beef with revolvers, but just feel better about having the additional rounds if needed. Besides, much of my issue is that I like to go to the range often, and even with speed loaders I find it easier to just keep a handful of loaded magazines and reload when the range is cold.

Well, I practice at the range quite often. It is actually a 16 round magazine, not sure why it takes the 16th round. It is a regular pre-ban hicap Glock 22 mag. Regardless, I'd probably try to hit with my FIRST shot to be honest. Anyway, are we talking gun vs. gun here, or guy with a knife or unarmed? If someone breaks into my house I'd much rather have the extra capacity if I didn't hit him instead of trying to reload. Speedloaders are of course an equalizer, but when that adrenaline hits it is very hard to do something as simple as grab one and put it in. Same with an extra magazine.

There isn't a safety on mine minus the trigger safety(and the internal ones to protect against drops) which is a standard Glock trigger safety. It doesn't prevent the trigger from being fired unless it is pulled from an angle. Otherwise all you do is pull the trigger and the safety automatically disengages. There is nothing to fiddle around with. You pull the trigger and it goes bang. And yes, I'd hope to hit with my first shots, but in an adenaline packed situation sometimes you hit and the person still doesn't go down, or you haven't hit them in a good spot. I also must point out that you have a better chance of supressing fire with a higher capacity gun, but I'd hope I never encounter such a situation and severely doubt I ever will.
