No point arguing with you people. You wont care until you actually get screwed by outsourcing.

I'm hoping the jobs being lost aren't the ones people from my school would do...

I won't succeed at doing something I don't like. If it comes to toughing it out in my dad's basement until I can find a job, so be it.

Jeebus! But when it comes to as many things as possible, I want the gov't to take a hands off approach! Europe is proof that such artificial protections don't work in the end! Their economy is collapsing because of way too many social burdens.

If you're job is being outsourced: sorry, but it's time to change careers!

A bigger concern is this H-1B visa.

If someone can do your job better than you and can get an H1B visa to be here to do it why shouldn't they?

I work with 2 kids on H1B visas and let me tell you they work harder and are smarter than almost anyone they could have hired out of school.

Have you even started working in the field yet? Once you have some experience you'll understand that there is more to programming than creating a spec sheet, throwing it at a programmer, and getting the final product 3 months down the line.

They will work hard, why? Because they have seen a much worse life where their life wasn't so easy, all of them are just waiting for a chance to make someone out of themselves. WHen they are given that chance, they will work their a$$ off and do the best possible

Oh, and parents have a huge influence. There, they see their parents working hard all the time so they feel that parents are working so hard just for them, that is the reason too.

I've had the same experience myself. A company saves money up front and then blows more fixing sh*te code.

I've noticed an immense decline in software patches lately although I don't know if it's attributable to outsourcing or not.

BF1942's latest patch messed up mine and many other's joystick support (can't fly a plane without one)

Far Cry's latest patch was pulled offline because of numerous complaints but not before most online servers switched to that latest patch which now leaves half the servers unusable. Not to mention they lost most of their development team recently (they left for greener pastures is the word on the grapevine)

Then ya got the Duke Nukem Fornever fiasco and such, well probalby has nothing to do with outsourcing but I'm just saying the industry looks to be hurting for real talent or management or something.

Oh and the H1B issue is dead. They already lowered the numbers massively. IIRC before they did that, and after the dotcom burst, the H1B numbers had already plummeted, because employers realized they could get plenty of people locally and didn't need to bring them in. Plus, TECHNICALLY, an h1B employee needs to make a similar wage as a local, so the employer has no need to get them unless the foreigner really is good. In practice it's not quite as clearcut, but you get my point.

The only people who get their jobs outsourced are the ones with no real unique skills. Try outsourcing the job of someone who does something like cryptography or optimization.

Screw that...if they weren't worth it a company wouldn't take the time or the effort to sponsor their visa. They're getting these visas on merit.

People are so sensitive about their jobs...

Man, economies change.

What policy would you have the government introduce? A ban on all code written outside of the US? How would that be enforced? What happens when that new robotics sofware written in India increases autoplant productivity by 50%, in every country but the US? Well, let's just say that I have family in the auto sector up here in Canada who would love that.

Man, this is coming from a left-wing Canadian, who is further left than most leftie Americans, and I say that outsourcing does more good than harm. How many jobs have been lost to outsourcing in the last decade? What percentage is that of the total workforce? What you should be asking from your government is programs that ease the hurt, like subsidies for retraining, and medical coverage during your transition. Maybe some kind of relief from your student loans.

Cutting out trade is good for no-one.

Protecting your own economy from transition, while using your relative power in the world to open foreign markets, is hypocritical.

It sounds to me like you feel you deserve a high paying coushy job and don't need to work for it. You'll note that those of us in IT right now are not losing sleep over outsourcing. It sucks, sure, but we realize that if we're worth a damn we'll probably not be begging for food soon. I've been more confident about IT in the past year than I was in the previous two.

It just looks more and more like no matter what you can do the company can always hire 4 indians to do the same thing cheaper.

Exactly. If you have a skill and are good at what you do they can't outsource you. People who are good get job offers all the time.

IMO one world economy in the long term promotes peace. I am truly sorry though for those who are on losing side of this :(
